A Major Upgrade in Speed and Capacity
The most significant change is a massive boost in the system's capacity. The new platform is engineered to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly fivefold increase from the previous capacity of about 32,000. This is complemented by
an upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) that can now process over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, up from just 4 lakh. For the average passenger, this means faster searches for train availability, quicker PNR status checks, and a much lower chance of the website crashing during the high-demand Tatkal booking window.
A Cleaner, More Intuitive Interface
One of the most common complaints about the old website was its cluttered and confusing interface. The new design tackles this head-on with a cleaner, more intuitive layout. The goal is to reduce distractions and help users complete their bookings with fewer clicks. This means the removal of unnecessary pop-ups, flashing graphics, and most importantly, a reduction in the number of CAPTCHA verifications that frequently interrupt the booking process. The initiative for this overhaul was notably spurred by students who directly raised concerns about the website's usability with the Union Railway Minister.
Smarter Booking Features for Passengers
Several new features have been introduced to make the booking process more user-friendly. A major improvement is the ability to see seat availability across all classes—like Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier—on a single screen, eliminating the need to check each class individually. Passengers can also now submit their preferred seat or berth choices during booking. Another feature long-awaited by travellers is a fare calendar, which allows users to compare ticket prices across different dates, helping those with flexible plans find the most economical options.
AI-Powered Assistance and Future-Ready Tech
The new system integrates artificial intelligence to improve the user experience. The 'Ask Disha' chatbot, for example, can now handle more complex queries, including booking, cancellations, and refunds in multiple languages. The backend upgrade also incorporates AI to provide more accurate waitlist confirmation predictions, with accuracy reportedly improving significantly. While the new IRCTC website interface is live, it is being integrated with a completely revamped Passenger Reservation System that has been in use for nearly four decades. The full, seamless experience is expected to be available in the coming months as this integration is completed.
Making Railways More Accessible for All
The refresh isn't just about speed; it's also about inclusivity. The redesigned website will support multiple Indian languages, making it accessible to a wider audience beyond English and Hindi speakers. Furthermore, the new platform aims to integrate concession bookings for different groups, such as Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), students, and patients, into a single, unified system, simplifying a process that was previously fragmented.
