First Step: The Great Purge
Before you can organize, you must declutter. Pull every single food storage container and lid out of your cabinets and drawers. Lay them all out and begin the sorting process. Match every base with its corresponding lid. Any container without a partner
must go. Be ruthless in this stage. Inspect each piece for damage—toss anything that is heavily stained, cracked, warped, or smells funky even after washing. Finally, be honest about quantity. If you have containers you haven't used in over a year, it's time to let them go. You can donate clean, usable extras or find creative ways to repurpose them for non-food storage, like organizing small items in a garage or craft room.
Method 1: Store Them as Matched Sets
The simplest and most straightforward method is to store each container with its lid securely snapped on. This approach completely eliminates the problem of searching for a match because they are never separated. When you need a container, you grab a complete unit, and when you put it away clean, you re-pair it immediately. The major advantage is its simplicity; it requires no special organizers. The downside, however, is that this method takes up significantly more cabinet or drawer space, as you cannot nest the containers within each other. It works best for those who have a smaller collection of containers or ample storage space to spare.
Method 2: Nest Bases, Corral Lids
A popular space-saving alternative involves separating lids and bases. To maximize space, nest the container bases inside one another, grouping them by shape and size. Then, gather all the lids and store them together in a single, dedicated location. The key to making this work is to 'corral' the lids in a container, such as a basket, a clear bin, or a deep drawer. This keeps them from sliding all over the cabinet and turning into a jumbled mess. By keeping all the lids contained in one spot next to the nested bases, you still have easy access to everything without sacrificing precious cabinet real estate.
Method 3: File Your Lids Vertically
For ultimate visibility, think like an office manager and file your lids. Storing lids vertically is a game-changer, as it allows you to see all your options at a glance and pull one out without disturbing the others. There are several clever ways to achieve this. A simple plate-drying rack or an old CD tower can be repurposed to hold lids upright. Another effective tool is an office letter or mail organizer, which can be placed in a cabinet or even mounted to the inside of the cabinet door to save shelf space. For those with deep drawers, adjustable drawer dividers or a pegboard system can create perfect vertical slots to keep every lid in its place.
Method 4: Invest in a Unified System
If your collection is a chaotic mix of different brands, shapes, and sizes acquired over many years, the problem might be the containers themselves. Investing in a single, unified set of food storage containers can make organization almost effortless. Many modern sets are specifically designed for efficient storage, featuring lids that snap to the bottom of the containers or interlocking designs that keep everything together. Opting for a full set of nesting containers, where smaller ones fit perfectly into larger ones, can be a great space-saver. While it requires an initial investment, switching to a uniform set—especially glass containers which don't stain or retain odors—can bring long-lasting order to your kitchen.
