A Recovery with a Catch
After a period of slowdown, India's tech hiring is firmly on the rebound. As of October 2026, active technology job openings climbed to 1.23 lakh, the highest level in 18 months. This represents a 17% year-on-year increase, signalling renewed confidence
in the sector. However, this isn't a case of all boats rising with the tide. A closer look at the numbers reveals a significant detail: the recovery is not evenly distributed. While hiring is up, companies are being highly selective, and the strongest momentum is concentrated among seasoned professionals, not fresh graduates.
The Strategic Shift to Senior Talent
During the downturn, many companies streamlined their operations, which often included workforce reductions. Now, as they rebuild, the focus is not just on filling seats but on making strategic hires that deliver immediate value. Mid-senior positions account for the lion's share of the market, making up 55% of all active technology jobs with 68,000 openings. This demand is up 19% from the previous year. In contrast, while entry-level opportunities have seen a modest annual increase, they actually declined month-on-month. This indicates that organisations are prioritising professionals who can hit the ground running, lead projects, and stabilise teams without needing extensive training.
Experience Equals Efficiency and ROI
The preference for experienced candidates is rooted in sound business logic. In a competitive environment, speed and efficiency are paramount. Senior professionals bring a wealth of practical knowledge, having navigated multiple project cycles and technological shifts. This experience translates into faster onboarding, quicker project delivery, and a lower risk of costly errors. Startups, in particular, are finding that hiring seasoned executives can significantly improve operational efficiency and reduce burn rates. Furthermore, as companies prepare for growth, having experienced leaders instills confidence in investors and signals market stability.
The In-Demand Skills of a Veteran
The current hiring landscape is heavily skewed towards specialised, high-impact skills that are often honed over several years. Roles in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), data science, and cloud architecture are seeing the highest demand and commanding premium salaries. These are not entry-level domains; they require a deep understanding of complex systems and strategic implementation. For example, roles like AI/ML Architect or Cloud Architect require a blend of technical mastery and strategic vision that is typically found in professionals with significant experience. Companies are actively seeking experts who can not only write code but also design scalable infrastructure and lead teams.
Mentorship and Building for the Future
Beyond their direct technical contributions, senior professionals play a crucial role in mentoring junior talent and fostering a culture of excellence. As teams rebuild and expand, the guidance of experienced hands is invaluable for upskilling the next generation of engineers and developers. This focus on capability-building is also evident in the rise of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), which are increasingly hiring for specialised roles in AI and data. While the current market appears challenging for freshers, the long-term health of the ecosystem depends on this transfer of knowledge from senior to junior members.
