The Crowded Reality of Airport Lounges
For years, flashing a credit card for lounge access felt like a travel hack, turning a chaotic wait into a comfortable pause with free food and Wi-Fi. That secret is now out. Today, lounges in major Indian airports often have queues snaking out the door,
especially during peak hours. The once-exclusive spaces are now frequently packed, with travellers jostling for seats and a share of the buffet. This surge in popularity, driven by the wide availability of complimentary access through numerous credit cards, has diluted the very 'premium' experience the lounge was meant to provide. As passenger traffic has boomed, what was once a quiet oasis can now feel as busy as the terminal you were trying to escape.
Banks Are Changing the Rules of Entry
The overcrowding hasn't gone unnoticed by the banks and card issuers footing the bill. In response, many have started tightening the rules. Gone are the days when almost any card offered easy access. Now, an increasing number of banks are introducing spending-based criteria. For example, you might need to spend a minimum amount, like ₹50,000 in the previous quarter, to unlock one or two lounge visits. Some cards have reduced the number of complimentary visits, while others have removed the perk entirely from their entry-level offerings. Even premium cards are seeing changes, with stricter guest policies and a shift towards voucher-based systems where you have to pre-qualify for access via a banking app.
How to Recheck Your Card's True Value
With these changes, simply having a card that 'offers' lounge access is no longer enough. It’s crucial to read the fine print. First, check your card’s specific terms. Is access unlimited or capped at a few visits per quarter or year? Second, are there spending requirements? Be honest about whether your typical spending will actually unlock the benefit. Third, check the network. Your card might grant access via Priority Pass, DragonPass, or a direct bank partnership, and these networks cover different lounges. An HDFC Infinia card, for example, offers unlimited access through Priority Pass, while a mid-tier card might only offer a few domestic visits through the bank's direct partners. Finally, consider the annual fee. If lounge access is the main reason you hold a card, calculate the per-visit cost you are effectively paying.
What Defines a Good Lounge Experience Now?
A truly valuable lounge experience today goes beyond a free meal. Look for lounges that manage crowds effectively, offering a genuinely peaceful environment. Comfort, cleanliness, and the availability of seating are paramount. High-speed, reliable Wi-Fi is a must for business travellers. Some premium lounges distinguish themselves with better quality food and beverages, shower facilities, or dedicated quiet zones. A lounge that consistently delivers on these fronts, even if it means paying for access or holding a truly premium card, can still be worth it. The goal has shifted from just getting 'free' access to securing 'quality' access.
Exploring the Alternatives
If your credit card's lounge perk no longer seems worthwhile, there are other options. Many lounges offer pay-per-use access, with prices typically ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹4,000. For an occasional traveller, this can be more cost-effective than paying a high annual fee on a credit card. Another strategy is to look at other travel perks your card might offer. Some cards provide credits for airport dining, which you could use at a restaurant of your choice, or offer benefits like complimentary hotel status or travel insurance that provide more tangible value. Finally, flying business or first class often grants access to exclusive airline-run lounges that are generally less crowded and offer a higher standard of service than third-party contract lounges.
