What is This New Weather System?
Meteorologists are tracking a cyclonic circulation that is expected to develop into a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system is likely to form around September 11 off the coasts
of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh. Low-pressure systems are the primary drivers of the monsoon. They are essentially atmospheric vortices that draw in moisture-laden winds from the sea, pulling them over the land where they release rain. The formation of such a system is a classic indicator of an active monsoon phase, especially during the latter part of the season.
Which Regions Will See a Revival?
The primary impact of this system is expected over eastern, central, and parts of northern India. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall for parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, through Thursday, with districts like Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Bankura on alert. As the system moves inland, likely in a west-northwestward direction, it will carry rain across central India. States like Madhya Pradesh and eventually parts of Maharashtra are expected to see a revival of rainfall from around September 13 or 14. This could bring much-needed showers to interior regions of Maharashtra that have been experiencing subdued rainfall since August. Further north, fairly widespread rains are also predicted for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between September 10 and 13.

A good spell of rain now can help replenish soil moisture and salvage agricultural output in many regions.

For now, the focus remains on the low-pressure system forming around September 11 and its journey inland. While the monsoon season officially enters its final month, this revival shows that it is far from over. Active systems can keep the rains going even as the withdrawal process begins in other parts of the country.
