The Ideal Duration: 5 to 7 Days
To truly do justice to the stunning landscapes of Sangla and Kalpa, you should set aside a minimum of 5 days, starting from Shimla. If your journey begins from Delhi or Chandigarh, a more realistic and comfortable timeframe is 7 days. This accounts for the long
and demanding travel days required to reach this remote part of Himachal Pradesh. While a shorter trip is possible, it often feels rushed, leaving you with more memories of the road than the destinations themselves. The extra days allow for proper acclimatization, unhurried exploration, and a buffer for unpredictable mountain weather or road conditions.
Why Rushing Is a Mistake
The primary reason for a longer itinerary is the sheer travel time involved. The journey from major cities to the Kinnaur region is an adventure in itself, with winding roads carved into cliffsides. From Delhi, reaching Sangla can take between 14 to 19 hours of driving. Even from Shimla, the gateway to Kinnaur, the drive to Sangla is a full day's affair, taking around 7 to 9 hours. Trying to squeeze the trip into fewer days means you'll arrive exhausted and have little time to soak in the serene atmosphere, explore the villages, or simply sit and admire the breathtaking mountain views that make this region so special.
A Sample 5-Day Itinerary (From Shimla)
Day 1: Shimla to Sangla Start early for the long drive to Sangla Valley. The journey of approximately 223 kilometres will take most of the day, passing through towns like Narkanda and Rampur. After checking into your hotel, take a gentle evening walk to acclimatise to the altitude of about 2,700 metres. Day 2: Sangla Valley and Chitkul Dedicate this day to exploring the Baspa Valley. Visit the ancient Kamru Fort, a towering wooden structure that was once the seat of the Bushahr rulers. Afterwards, take a scenic drive to Chitkul, the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border. The 24-kilometre drive from Sangla to Chitkul takes about an hour and offers stunning views of the Baspa River. Explore the charming village before returning to Sangla for the night. Day 3: Sangla to Kalpa The drive from Sangla to Kalpa is relatively short, covering about 40-50 kilometres in around 2-3 hours. This gives you a relaxed morning. En route, you can stop at Reckong Peo, the district headquarters, for any supplies. After checking into your hotel in Kalpa, spend the afternoon exploring the village. Visit the Narayan-Nagini Temple and the Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Monastery to appreciate the unique blend of Hindu and Buddhist cultures. Day 4: Discovering Kalpa Wake up early for the main event: a spectacular sunrise over the Kinner Kailash range. The view is one of the most revered sights in the Himalayas. Later, take an excursion to the nearby Roghi village, a quaint settlement known for its traditional Kinnauri houses and apple orchards. The walk or drive also takes you past the thrilling 'Suicide Point', a vertical cliff with a stunning valley view. Day 5: Kalpa to Shimla Begin your return journey to Shimla, which will again be a full-day drive of about 8-9 hours. It's a long road, but you'll be travelling with memories of towering peaks and verdant valleys.
For Travellers from Delhi: The 7-Day Plan
If you are starting from Delhi, the 5-day itinerary above becomes the core of a 7-day plan. Day 1 would be dedicated to travelling from Delhi to Shimla or Narkanda. Day 2 would be the journey from Shimla to Sangla. You would then follow Days 2, 3, and 4 from the itinerary above. Day 6 would be the long drive back from Kalpa to Shimla, and Day 7 would be the final leg from Shimla back to Delhi. This pacing prevents burnout and makes the entire experience much more enjoyable.
