A cool-roof coating is much more than just a layer of white paint. It's a scientifically formulated liquid membrane designed to combat heat in two powerful ways: high solar reflectance and high thermal emittance. First, it acts like a mirror for sunlight.
While a typical dark concrete or asphalt roof absorbs a huge amount of solar radiation, a cool roof reflects it back into the atmosphere. This property is known as solar reflectance or albedo. A variety of brands offer these products, with costs generally ranging from ₹28 to ₹45 per square foot, including materials and labour. The final price depends on the condition of the terrace, the need for crack repairs, and the specific grade of coating used. While white is the most effective colour for reflecting heat, cool coatings are available in a range of colours, though their performance might be slightly lower than pure white. With a lifespan of five to seven years, they represent a sound investment in comfort, energy savings, and property protection.
