The Internet Is Not a Given
The most common point of failure for any remote worker is their internet connection. Without it, access to cloud applications, communication platforms, and company servers is impossible. Acknowledging this single point of failure is the first step; building redundancy is the second. The most accessible backup is often already in your pocket: your smartphone. Most modern smartphones can be used as a mobile hotspot, providing a crucial bridge to get back online. For those who can't afford any downtime, a dedicated mobile hotspot or a 4G/5G cellular router offers a more robust solution. These devices can automatically take over when a primary internet connection fails. Companies serious about resilience should consider providing stipends for employees to purchase backup data plans or secondary internet services from a different provider, ensuring that an outage on one network doesn't silence the entire team. The key is to have these systems tested and ready before you need them, not scrambling to set up a hotspot while a critical client meeting is in progress.
Keeping the Lights On
Just as critical as connectivity is power. A laptop battery might last a few hours, but that won't save you during a prolonged outage, and it does nothing to power your internet router. The simplest solution is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). A small, affordable UPS can keep a Wi-Fi router and modem running for an hour or more, often long enough to outlast a brief local outage and keep you connected via your laptop. For those in areas prone to more significant weather events or who have a more complex setup including desktop computers and multiple monitors, a larger portable power station may be a worthwhile investment. These devices can power a complete home office setup for several hours. Employers can support this by educating staff on backup power options and, in some cases, providing allowances for employees in critical roles to purchase necessary equipment.
When Standard Communication Fails
During a widespread disruption, the communication tools we rely on—like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and email—might become inaccessible. If the internet is down, how does a manager check on their team? How are critical instructions disseminated? A resilient organization has a communication plan that doesn't rely on a single channel. This plan should be established and tested well in advance. It can be as simple as a designated phone number to call for updates or a group SMS chat for emergency coordination. The plan should clearly outline who is responsible for initiating contact and what the protocol is for checking in.
