What's on the Menu?
So, what does "gourmet" pet food actually look like? It's a world away from mass-produced dry pellets. The new wave of pet food features human-grade ingredients, with some brands offering freshly cooked, customised meals delivered via subscription. Menus boast items like chicken and pumpkin stew, boneless duck with vegetables, and even mutton-flavoured ice cream. Many of these foods are formulated to be grain-free, preservative-free, and tailored to a pet's specific breed, age, or health needs, such as joint support or skin allergies. Startups are also creating innovative treats, from Himalayan yak cheese chews to freeze-dried meats and savoury pastries, making snack time as considered as mealtime.
A Booming Business
This shift in consumer behaviour has created a massive business opportunity. India's pet care market is experiencing explosive growth, with some estimates projecting it will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 16% through 2032. The pet food segment, in particular, was valued at hundreds of millions of dollars in 2024 and continues to expand rapidly. This has attracted a flurry of activity, from homegrown direct-to-consumer (D2C) startups like Pawfectly Made and Zoomies to investments from major players like Licious and Drools. These companies are disrupting the market with clean labels, subscription models, and a focus on building trust with a new generation of discerning pet parents.
The New Reality of Meal Planning
For pet owners, this trend is fundamentally changing daily routines. Meal planning is no longer a simple scoop-and-serve affair. It now involves managing subscription deliveries, thawing and warming fresh meals, monitoring portion sizes for specific dietary goals, and reading ingredient lists with the same scrutiny as their own food. Some owners even prepare different meals for multiple pets based on individual needs and preferences. While a bowl of kibble offered convenience, the new gourmet standard requires more time, effort, and financial investment, with monthly food bills for some pets running into thousands of rupees. It reflects a deliberate choice to prioritise the pet's health and happiness over convenience.
Challenges on the Horizon
Despite the rapid growth, the gourmet pet food industry faces hurdles. Price sensitivity remains a significant barrier, with these premium products often costing substantially more than traditional options. This limits their accessibility primarily to affluent households in major metropolitan areas like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru. Furthermore, a large portion of the market still relies on home-cooked food or is just beginning to transition to packaged meals, requiring significant consumer education on nutrition and safety.
