The Price You Actually Pay: A Tale of Taxes
The price charged to dealers by OMCs is just the starting point. The final retail price of petrol and diesel in India is heavily influenced by a combination of central and state taxes. In fact, taxes often make up around half of the price you pay at the pump. The central government levies an excise duty, which is a fixed amount per litre and is uniform across the country. On top of that, each state government imposes its own Value Added Tax (VAT), which is a percentage of the price and varies significantly from one state to another.
