A Minor Change with a Major Impact
Indian Railways has adjusted the departure timings for two Vande Bharat trains originating from Varanasi Junction. The change, which takes effect on September 2, involves the trains leaving ten minutes earlier than their previous schedules. While a ten-minute
adjustment might seem minor, it is a crucial update for passengers, as anyone arriving according to the old timetable risks missing their train. The modification has been made for what railway officials describe as operational reasons and to enhance passenger convenience. This change is specific to the departure from Varanasi; timings at all subsequent stations on both routes will remain unchanged.
Varanasi-Ranchi Express: New Afternoon Time
The first train affected is the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20888). Previously, this train departed from Varanasi at 4:05 PM. Under the revised schedule, it will now depart at 3:55 PM, ten minutes earlier. This service, which was inaugurated in March 2024, is a vital link between Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, running six days a week (except Tuesdays). It covers a distance of approximately 536 kilometres in about seven hours and 50 minutes. Key stops along this popular route include Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Sasaram, Gaya, Koderma, Hazaribagh Road, Parasnath, Bokaro Steel City, and Muri, before it reaches its destination in Ranchi.
Varanasi-Deoghar Express: An Earlier Start
The second service with a revised schedule is the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22500). This train, popular among pilgrims traveling to the revered Baba Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple in Deoghar, will also see its departure time moved forward. Previously scheduled to leave Varanasi at 6:20 AM, the train will now depart at 6:10 AM. This earlier start is designed to streamline operations for the service connecting two major religious hubs. The journey covers a distance of around 456 kilometres, providing a fast daytime connection for thousands of passengers. As with the Ranchi service, the arrival and departure timings at all other stations along its route remain the same.

The primary takeaway for travelers is to be aware of these new, earlier departure times. Anyone booked on the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat (20888) or the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat (22500) on or after September 2 should adjust their travel plans accordingly. Arriving at Varanasi station based on the old 4:05 PM or 6:20 AM timings could result in a missed journey. This is especially critical for passengers who plan their arrival at the station with little time to spare. Indian Railways has advised all passengers to double-check the revised timetable before beginning their journey to the station to avoid any last-minute confusion or inconvenience.
Context of the Vande Bharat Service
The Vande Bharat Express network represents a significant leap forward in Indian passenger rail, offering semi-high-speed, comfortable, and efficient travel between major cities. The Varanasi-Ranchi service, for instance, is the 49th Vande Bharat train launched in the country and is managed by the South Eastern Railway (SER) zone. These trains offer two classes of travel: AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car. The fares for the Varanasi to Ranchi route are approximately ₹1,470 for the AC Chair Car and ₹2,695 for the Executive Chair Car. These schedule adjustments are part of the ongoing efforts by Indian Railways to optimize the network, improve punctuality, and fine-tune services as the Vande Bharat fleet expands across the nation.
