Why Kinnaur for a Festive Escape?
As the festive season approaches, the desire for a unique and peaceful celebration grows. Recent travel trends show a significant rise in bookings for Himalayan destinations, with Sangla and Kalpa seeing a nearly threefold increase in interest for the 2026
festive period. Travellers are increasingly seeking solace over spectacle, and these twin jewels of Kinnaur offer just that. The autumn months of September and October are considered the best time to visit, with clear skies, pleasant daytime temperatures, and stunning post-monsoon landscapes. The roads are generally in their best condition, making the journey more reliable before the deep winter snows begin in November.
The Festive Allure of the Mountains
While you may not find the large-scale city-style celebrations here, the festive spirit in Kinnaur is deeply authentic and cultural. The autumn season often coincides with local festivals like Phulaich (the festival of flowers) and Raulane. Phulaich, also known as Ukhyang, is a beautiful festival where villagers gather alpine flowers for local deities and remember ancestors. The dates vary by village but typically fall between August and October. Towards the end of October, the National Tribal Festival is sometimes held, showcasing Kinnauri folk dances, handicrafts, and culture, offering a rare window into local traditions. A trip during this time offers a chance to witness life that moves at a different, more meaningful pace.
Sangla Valley: Orchards and Adventure
Often called the Baspa Valley, Sangla is a wonderland of apple orchards, dense forests, and traditional wooden homes. The valley's main town, Sangla, sits at an altitude of about 8,900 feet and serves as an excellent base. A must-visit is the ancient Kamru Fort, a tower-like structure dedicated to the goddess Kamakshi, which requires a short, scenic walk through Kamru village. From Sangla, a trip to Chitkul is essential. As the last inhabited village near the Indo-Tibetan border, its setting is dramatic and pristine. The journey itself, alongside the Baspa River, is an experience to remember. Other attractions include the Bering Nag Temple and simply spending time by the river.
Kalpa: Face to Face with Kinner Kailash
Situated about 40 km from Sangla, Kalpa offers what is arguably one of the most majestic mountain views in all of Himachal Pradesh. The village is perched high above the Sutlej River, looking directly at the sacred Kinner Kailash massif. Waking up to the sight of the sun illuminating these peaks is a spiritual experience in itself. Key spots in Kalpa include the Kalpa Monastery (Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Gompa) and the Narayan-Nagini Temple, both showcasing fine examples of traditional Kinnauri architecture. A short drive away are Roghi village and the Roghi Cliff Viewpoint, often called 'Suicide Point' for its thrilling vertical drop and panoramic vistas.
Planning Your 2026 Itinerary
Reaching Sangla and Kalpa requires a dedicated road journey. The most common route starts from Delhi or Chandigarh, passing through Shimla. The entire drive from Delhi to Kalpa can take 14 to 18 hours, so it's highly recommended to break the journey with an overnight stay in Shimla or Narkanda. From Shimla, the drive to Sangla is another 8-9 hours. You can hire a local taxi from Shimla, which is advisable if you aren't experienced with mountain driving. Alternatively, several HRTC and private buses ply the route from Delhi and Shimla to Reckong Peo, the district headquarters near Kalpa. From Peo, local buses and taxis are readily available for the short trip to Kalpa or Sangla.
Where to Stay and What to Pack
Both Sangla and Kalpa offer a range of accommodation, from luxury camps and boutique hotels to cozy homestays and budget-friendly guesthouses. In Sangla, options like Banjara Camps offer a riverside experience, while Kalpa has hotels like The Grand Shamba-La known for their stunning views. Homestays provide a wonderful opportunity to experience local hospitality and food. Packing is key for a comfortable trip. The weather in October and November sees pleasant days but cold nights, with temperatures potentially dropping to 2-5°C. You will need to pack in layers: thermal wear, fleece jackets, and a heavy windproof jacket are essential. Also, carry comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and any personal medications. Remember that reliable ATMs are mainly in Reckong Peo, so it's wise to carry sufficient cash.
