A Major System Overhaul
Indian Railways has begun a phased rollout of a next-generation Passenger Reservation System (PRS), the core technology that has handled ticketing for nearly four decades. The legacy system is being replaced with a modern, cloud-based platform designed
to be faster and more reliable. According to the Ministry of Railways, the new system will boost booking capacity from the current 32,000 tickets per minute to over 1.5 lakh tickets per minute—a nearly five-fold increase. Additionally, the capacity for passenger enquiries, such as checking PNR status or seat availability, is set to jump tenfold, from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. This upgrade, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), marks one of the most significant modernizations of the railway's public-facing technology in years.
Online vs. Offline: The Full Picture
While a five-fold increase in PRS capacity sounds massive, it's crucial to understand what the PRS is. It's the backend system that powers all reserved ticketing, including both the physical counters at stations and the online portals. However, the vast majority of transactions now happen online. Between June 2025 and June 2026, a staggering 89% of the 65.08 crore reserved tickets were booked online through the IRCTC website and app. Only 11%, or about 7.18 crore tickets, were purchased at physical PRS counters. This shows a massive shift in passenger behaviour towards digital platforms. The new upgrade is not just for the physical counters; it's a comprehensive overhaul of the entire reservation engine that serves both online and offline users, aiming to bring stability during high-demand periods like the Tatkal window.
Why Upgrade a System Used by So Few?
If nearly 90% of bookings are online, one might wonder why there's a need to invest in a system that also serves the diminishing number of counter bookings. The answer lies in accessibility and reliability. The physical PRS counters remain a vital lifeline for millions of citizens who may not have reliable internet access or be comfortable with digital transactions. They are crucial in rural areas and for certain demographics. Furthermore, the previous system, which dates back decades, was prone to crashes and slowdowns, especially during the morning Tatkal booking rush, frustrating both online users and those waiting in queues. The new, unified system is designed to handle these massive, simultaneous traffic spikes more efficiently, creating a more stable and equitable booking experience for everyone, regardless of how they choose to book.
More Booking Power, Not More Berths
This is the most important piece of context for any passenger. A faster, more capable reservation system does not create a single extra seat on a train. The upgrade is about improving the efficiency and fairness of the booking process, not increasing the number of available tickets. The chronic issue of demand far outstripping supply on popular routes remains a separate challenge, one that can only be solved by adding more trains, coaches, and tracks. The new system will make the race for a ticket smoother and less prone to technical glitches—early data from the new IRCTC beta website already shows slight improvements in Tatkal booking speeds—but the race itself will continue as long as seats are limited.
The Future of Your Train Ticket
The transition to the new PRS is happening in phases to minimize disruption to a service that is used around the clock. Passengers are already interacting with parts of the new system through the recently launched IRCTC beta website. For the average passenger, the success of this upgrade will be measured in tangible terms: fewer website crashes, a smoother experience during Tatkal bookings, and faster updates on waitlist status. It represents a critical investment in national infrastructure, acknowledging that even as India goes digital, the system must be robust enough to serve everyone.
