Confirm RBI Registration First
Before engaging with any NBFC, your first and most crucial step is to verify its registration with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). An RBI-registered entity is bound by regulatory guidelines on interest rates, loan practices, and customer protection.
This ensures you are dealing with a legitimate company and have access to official grievance redressal mechanisms, such as the RBI's Ombudsman, if disputes arise. Unregistered lenders operate outside the law, posing significant risks to borrowers.
Look Beyond the Interest Rate
While a low interest rate is attractive, it doesn't tell the whole story. Borrowers should focus on the Annual Percentage Rate (APR), which includes the interest rate plus all additional fees. NBFCs, like banks, levy various charges that can substantially increase the cost of a loan. These often include processing fees (typically 1% to 3% of the loan amount), documentation charges, and other administrative costs that are sometimes buried in the fine print. Always ask for a complete breakdown of all charges to understand the true cost of borrowing.
Scrutinise Prepayment and Late Fee Clauses
The loan agreement's fine print contains critical details about penalties. Many borrowers are surprised by prepayment or foreclosure charges, which are fees for paying off your loan early. These can range from 2% to 5% of the outstanding balance. Conversely, late payment penalties can also be steep, often calculated as a percentage of the overdue EMI. Understanding these terms beforehand prevents costly surprises and helps you manage your repayment strategy effectively.
Assess Loan Flexibility and Customisation
A key advantage of NBFCs is their flexibility. Unlike traditional banks that may have rigid criteria, many NBFCs offer more customised loan structures based on a borrower's specific needs and cash flow. This could include options for a moratorium period, flexible repayment schedules, or loan top-ups. When choosing a lender, inquire about their willingness to tailor the loan terms. This flexibility can be particularly beneficial for small businesses or individuals with variable income streams.
Evaluate Customer Service and Digital Experience
The quality of a lender's service is often tested only after the loan is disbursed. Before committing, research the NBFC's reputation for customer support. Read online reviews and seek feedback from existing customers about their experience with query resolution and post-disbursal service. In an increasingly digital landscape, also assess the lender's online platform or app. A user-friendly and secure digital interface for managing your loan, making payments, and accessing statements is a sign of a modern, customer-focused lender.
Understand the Lender's Credit Score Policy
NBFCs are often more accessible for individuals with a lower credit score or those new to credit, a segment that may find it difficult to secure loans from traditional banks. However, their policies still vary. Some NBFCs might lend to applicants with a CIBIL score as low as 650, while others may have higher thresholds. It's also common for NBFCs to charge higher interest rates or processing fees for borrowers with lower credit scores to compensate for the increased risk. Clarifying the lender’s credit score requirements and its impact on your loan terms is a vital step.
