Dubai is adding another superlative to its list of attractions: the world's first and longest walkway made of 24-karat gold. This glittering project in historic Deira aims to be more than just a photo opportunity; it’s a strategic move to boost tourism.
A Path Paved with Gold
In a city known for its architectural marvels, the latest announcement from the Dubai Gold District still manages to capture the imagination. Plans are underway to construct a pedestrian walkway featuring real 24-karat gold elements integrated into the path's design. According to officials, the project is set to be the first and longest of its kind in the world. Rashid Al Harmoodi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District, stated the walkway is expected to open before the end of 2026, possibly within the next two months. While the exact length and cost remain under wraps for now, the intent is clear: to offer residents and tourists an unparalleled experience of walking on a literal golden path. This unique attraction is the centrepiece of the newly launched Dubai Gold District, a commercial zone in Deira established in January 2026 to consolidate the emirate's massive gold and jewellery trade.
Revitalising a Historic Hub
The choice of Deira for this lavish project is deeply symbolic. Before the rise of Downtown's skyscrapers and the sprawling villas of the Palm, Deira was the heart of Dubai. Its bustling souks, including the famous Gold Souk, and its location along the Dubai Creek made it the original engine of the emirate's economy. In recent decades, as development shifted to other parts of the city, Deira has retained its historic charm but has not seen the same level of modern investment. The gold walkway is part of a broader strategy to breathe new life into the area, re-establishing it as a prime destination for both commerce and tourism. The Dubai Gold District itself is a major component of this revitalisation, bringing together over 1,000 retailers, wholesale traders, and jewellery businesses into a single, cohesive hub. Officials report that since the start of 2026, the district has already seen a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new luxury shops.
More Than Just a Walkway
The gold walkway is not an isolated gimmick but a key feature within a larger ecosystem designed to attract global attention. The Dubai Gold District plans to become a comprehensive destination, merging trade with tourism. This includes a new exhibition space intended to become the largest gold and jewellery trading exhibition in the Middle East. By creating unique visitor experiences like the golden path, the district aims to draw foot traffic that will benefit the hundreds of businesses operating there, from bullion traders to perfumeries and lifestyle brands. The announcement of the walkway was timed around another major achievement for Dubai's jewellery scene: a Guinness World Record for the heaviest pair of gold earrings, which are now on display in the district. This blend of record-breaking attractions and commercial ambition is a calculated effort to solidify Dubai's reputation as the undisputed global centre for gold.
Part of the Dubai 2040 Vision
The regeneration of Deira is a core component of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, a longterm strategy for sustainable urban development across the emirate. The plan identifies Deira and Bur Dubai as the city's historic heart, outlining a vision to preserve its cultural heritage while upgrading infrastructure and boosting its economic vitality. A key goal of any plan is to enhance tourism by developing distinct attractions in different urban centres. Last year, Dubai Municipality completed a project creating nearly 1.8 kilometres of heritage tourist trails through Deira's markets to better connect landmarks like the Spice Souq and Gold Souk. The new Gold Walkway complements these efforts, adding a modern, luxurious layer to the traditional souk experience and aligning with any broader goal of making Dubai the world's best city to live in and visit.
