Which Trains Are Getting the Upgrade?
The enhanced services have been implemented by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and cover a mix of premium and high-demand routes. Two Vande Bharat Express services are on the list, reflecting a continued focus on elevating the passenger experience
on India's premier trains. The five trains are: New Jalpaiguri–Patna Vande Bharat Express, New Jalpaiguri–Guwahati Vande Bharat Express, Kamakhya–SMVT Bengaluru Express, Guwahati–Kolkata Garib Rath Express, and Dibrugarh–Mumbai LTT Express. According to officials, the rollout began on October 10 and was completed across all five services by October 14, making NFR the second railway zone to implement this model.
AI-Powered Cleaning and Water Checks
A major part of this initiative is a technology-first approach to cleanliness. The system uses AI-based assessments to monitor housekeeping standards, ensuring that cleaning is not just done, but done well. This is complemented by geo-tagged verification of services and digital tracking of staff to improve accountability. For passengers, this means a more rigorous and consistent approach to the upkeep of coaches, washrooms, and AC windows throughout the journey. The 'enhanced water checks' are a direct response to one of the most frequent complaints on long-distance journeys. Dedicated teams will now specifically monitor water availability to prevent shortages, ensuring that taps don't run dry mid-journey.
Faster Resolution for Onboard Issues
Beyond cleanliness and water, the initiative also provides 'basic technical assistance'. This is designed to address small but frustrating problems that can mar a travel experience, such as a malfunctioning charging point or an issue with the air conditioning. Instead of waiting for a major station, passengers can now report these issues to dedicated onboard teams. The railway has set an ambitious target of resolving these complaints within two hours. Any issue that cannot be fixed within this timeframe will be automatically escalated to higher railway authorities for follow-up, ensuring that passenger grievances are not ignored. This structured complaint resolution system is a significant step towards a more responsive and passenger-centric service.
What This Means for Your Journey
For travellers on these five routes, this initiative promises a tangible improvement in comfort and peace of mind. The focus on proactive maintenance and rapid response aims to reduce the uncertainty that often accompanies train travel. Knowing that dedicated teams are onboard to handle everything from washroom hygiene to technical glitches can make for a much more pleasant experience. Furthermore, the system incorporates real-time passenger feedback and star ratings. This allows the railways to continuously evaluate the performance of the housekeeping and technical teams, creating a data-driven loop for service improvement. Ultimately, the goal is to set a new, higher standard for on-board services that can be replicated across more trains and zones in the Indian Railways network.
