Tackling the July Travel Surge
July is a peak travel month across India. With schools on break in some regions and the onset of monsoon festivals, demand for train tickets often outstrips supply, leading to long waiting lists and crowded carriages. For families travelling with children
and extra luggage, securing confirmed berths on popular routes becomes a significant source of stress. Recognizing this annual challenge, Indian Railways has proactively announced a massive rollout of special train services to manage the extra passenger traffic, aiming to provide a smoother and more comfortable travel experience.
Hundreds of New Services Added
To clear the extra rush, various railway zones have announced hundreds of additional train trips for July 2026. For instance, the Railway Minister has confirmed that over 300 special trains are planned for the Puri Rath Yatra alone, which begins in mid-July. Similarly, more than 100 special services will be notified for the Onam festival in Kerala. These are in addition to the extensive summer special services running until mid-July, which total over 18,000 trips across the country. This large-scale deployment is one of the biggest seasonal expansions, designed to enhance connectivity and increase seat availability on high-demand routes.
Key Routes for Family Travel
These special services connect major metropolitan areas with hometowns and popular holiday destinations. Western Railway has extended services on several key routes until the end of July, including Mumbai Central to Banaras and Katihar, and Udhna to Ayodhya Cantt, benefiting pilgrims and families. There are also special trains connecting Mumbai with various cities in Gujarat, such as Bhavnagar, Bhuj, and Veraval. Southern Railway has extended eight special trains to handle the rush, including services between Chennai Egmore and Kanyakumari, and Tirunelveli and Tambaram. Similarly, East Coast Railway has augmented several trains with extra coaches for routes like Bhubaneswar to Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar to Tirupati throughout July.
What Makes These Trains 'Special'?
The term 'special' can mean a few different things. Primarily, it refers to services that are not part of the regular, year-round timetable but are added to meet seasonal demand. Some are designated as 'Special Fare' trains, where fares may be higher than on regular trains due to dynamic pricing. The primary benefit is simply the availability of more berths. In some cases, existing trains are augmented with extra coaches—like an additional AC Three-Tier or Sleeper Class coach—to increase capacity on a specific route for a limited period. This flexibility allows the railways to respond directly to passenger demand on the busiest corridors.
How to Book Your Tickets
Booking for these special trains is done through the same channels as regular trains. The easiest way is via the official IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. When searching for trains, these special services will appear in the search results, often with a train number beginning with '0' or '9'. It's important to book as early as possible, as these tickets are in high demand. Bookings for some of the newly announced July services are already open or will open in the coming days. It’s worth noting that concessions and some quotas may not be applicable on certain special fare trains.
Tips for a Smooth Monsoon Journey
Travelling by train during the monsoon can be a beautiful experience, but it requires some preparation. Pack waterproof bags or rain covers for your luggage and electronics. It’s also wise to carry a light raincoat and an umbrella. Given the possibility of weather-related delays, pack some extra snacks and bottled water, especially when travelling with children. Arrive at the station a little earlier than usual to account for potential traffic snarls caused by rain. Keeping these simple tips in mind can help ensure your family's train journey is as comfortable and hassle-free as possible.
