Understanding the Vietnam E-Visa
Gone are the days of long queues and complex paperwork at embassies. Vietnam has streamlined its entry process with an electronic visa (e-visa) system, and the great news is that Indian passport holders are eligible. This e-visa allows you to enter Vietnam for
tourism purposes for a stay of up to 90 days with either a single or multiple entry option. The entire process is conducted online, from application to payment and receiving the final document. It’s a fast, efficient, and straightforward way to get your travel authorisation sorted from the comfort of your home, leaving you more time to plan which pho stall to visit first.
Before You Apply: A Simple Checklist
To ensure your application sails through without a hitch, it's best to have everything ready before you begin. The requirements are minimal, but precision is key. You will need: 1. A Scanned Copy of Your Passport: This should be the main information page. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your intended date of entry into Vietnam. The scan must be clear, with all four corners visible. 2. A Digital Passport-Style Photo: This should be a recent photo (taken within the last six months) against a white background. You should be looking straight at the camera with a neutral expression, and your face must be clearly visible without glasses. Most rejections happen because of poor-quality photos, so take the time to get this right. 3. A Valid Email Address: This is where all communication, including the final e-visa document, will be sent. Double-check for typos! 4. A Credit or Debit Card: An international card (like Visa, Mastercard, or JCB) is needed to pay the non-refundable application fee online. The fee is currently around USD 25 for a single-entry visa.
Step-by-Step: The Application Process
Navigating the official portal is the most crucial part. Be extremely wary of third-party websites that look official but charge extra fees. The only official website for Vietnam e-visas is the one managed by the Vietnam Immigration Department. Once you're on the correct site, the process is simple: 1. Start the Application: Look for the section for e-visa applications. You'll be asked to upload your passport scan and digital photo first. 2. Fill in Your Details: The system will automatically pull some information from your passport scan. Carefully review this and fill in the remaining fields. This includes your full name (exactly as it appears in your passport), date of birth, religion, and contact information. 3. Enter Your Travel Information: You will need to specify your intended date of entry and exit, your entry and exit points (e.g., Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi or Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City), and the address of your first hotel or accommodation in Vietnam. Make sure the entry/exit ports you choose are on the approved list for e-visas.
Payment, Processing, and Patience
After you’ve double-checked every single detail on the application form for accuracy, you will proceed to the payment gateway. Once the fee is paid, you will receive a registration code. This code is your key to tracking the status of your application. Save it somewhere safe. The official processing time is typically three to five working days, but it's wise to apply at least two weeks before your travel date to account for any potential delays, especially during peak tourist seasons or public holidays. You can use your registration code on the official website to check if your visa has been approved.
Approval: The Final Step
Once your application is approved, you will be able to download a PDF of your e-visa from the portal. You will likely also receive an email notification. The first thing you should do is check all the details on the visa document — your name, passport number, and dates — to ensure they are 100% correct. If there are any errors, you may need to contact the support service immediately. Before you travel, print at least two copies of the e-visa. You will need to present one copy to the airline at check-in and another to the immigration officer upon arrival in Vietnam. Keep the printed copy with your passport at all times during your trip.
