regions. This dramatic clearing has led many to wonder if the monsoon has begun its official withdrawal. However, forecasters clarify that while this signals weakening activity, the formal retreat has not yet commenced. Simultaneously, other satellite views from INSAT-3DS show that the monsoon's atmospheric engine remains active, with massive cloud formations and a late-season surge bringing heavy downpours to parts of northern, eastern, and central India. This suggests the monsoon is making a final, powerful stand in some areas even as it prepares to recede from others.
The Science of the Great Retreat
The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is a gradual process, not an abrupt event. It typically begins in the second half of September from the northwestern parts of the country, marked by a significant reduction in rainfall, clearer skies, and lower humidity. This retreat is driven by large-scale atmospheric changes. As the landmass of the Indian subcontinent begins to cool, the low-pressure system that pulls moisture-laden winds from the sea weakens. In its place, an anticyclonic circulation—a high-pressure system—starts to establish over northwest India. This high-pressure system pushes drier, northwesterly winds across the region, effectively cutting off the moisture supply and bringing the rainy season to a close. Forecast models suggest this anticyclone is expected to strengthen through the second half of September, paving the way for an organised withdrawal.

The character of the 2026 monsoon season has been shaped by strong El Niño conditions prevailing over the Pacific Ocean. This climate pattern, which involves the warming of sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, often leads to weaker monsoon winds and reduced rainfall over India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted a 'below-normal' monsoon for the season, particularly for September. The large-scale reduction in cloudiness seen in satellite images across not just India but also wider South and East Asia is being linked to these broader atmospheric changes influenced by El Niño. While every El Niño's impact is different, its presence this year has been a key factor in the monsoon's overall performance and is influencing the nature of its withdrawal.
Impact on the Ground
This transitional phase has tangible consequences for millions. For farmers, the end of the monsoon is critical for harvesting Kharif (summer) crops and preparing for the Rabi (winter) sowing season. A timely and well-distributed withdrawal is crucial. The current late-season rains in some northern and eastern states are beneficial, but the overall forecast of a drier September is a concern. The performance of the monsoon directly impacts water reservoir levels, which are vital for drinking water supply and irrigation for winter crops. As of early in the season, reservoir levels were reported to be above the 10-year average, providing a crucial buffer against a potentially weak end to the monsoon.
