Understanding the Tool: FSSAI Food Safety Connect
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has a dedicated platform called 'Food Safety Connect' designed for consumers. This system, accessible via a mobile app and web portal, is your official channel to report concerns about the food
you buy and eat. You can use it to report a wide range of issues, including suspected adulteration, unhygienic conditions at restaurants, expired products, and misleading labels on packaged goods. The goal is to give citizens a direct line to authorities, turning public awareness into actionable complaints that can be investigated.
The Golden Rule: Gather Your Evidence First
An unsubstantiated complaint is unlikely to go far. Before you even open the app, your first job is to become a detective. The single most important factor for a successful complaint is evidence. This includes taking clear photographs or videos of the problem—be it a foreign object in your food, a dirty kitchen, or an expired date on a package. Always keep the purchase bill, as it proves where and when you bought the item. Also, retain the food product and its packaging. FSSAI itself advises that attaching relevant proof is crucial for authorities to verify and act upon your complaint.
Framing Your Complaint: Key Questions and Categories
When you file a complaint, you will be asked to categorize the issue. Being specific helps route the complaint to the right department. Instead of just saying 'bad food', ask specific, evidence-backed questions. Is the product past its 'Best Before' or 'Expiry' date? Does the packaging make a misleading claim, like '100% natural' when the ingredients say otherwise? Is the restaurant's hygiene visibly poor, with issues like improper food handling or dirty surfaces? Does the food contain a physical hazard like glass or plastic, or show signs of spoilage like a foul odour? Common complaint categories on the platform include food adulteration, expired products, poor hygiene, and incorrect labelling.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Filing Your Complaint
Using the Food Safety Connect app or web portal is a straightforward process. First, download the app or visit the consumer grievance portal. You will need to register with your contact details. Once logged in, select the option to lodge a new complaint. You'll be prompted to enter details about the food business, such as its name and address. If you have it, providing the 14-digit FSSAI license or registration number is extremely helpful. Next, you select the complaint category, write a clear description of the issue, and upload your evidence (photos, videos, bill). After submitting, you will receive a unique tracking ID to monitor its progress.
What Happens Next? Managing Your Expectations
Once submitted, your complaint is forwarded to the relevant authorities for investigation—this could be the state's food safety authority or the food business operator directly. The authorities are meant to verify the issue and initiate action. You can use your tracking ID to check the status. However, the resolution is not always immediate. The process can take time, and in some cases, you may need to escalate the issue if you are not satisfied with the initial response. The platform has an option to 're-raise' a complaint if you feel the resolution is inadequate. While the system is in place, public reviews sometimes mention technical glitches or slow responses, so persistence can be key.
