The New 30-Day Rule
The Thai cabinet has officially approved a new visa exemption rule for Indian passport holders. Under this updated policy, you can enter Thailand and stay for up to 30 days without needing to apply for a visa beforehand. This is a change from the previous
arrangement, which permitted a 60-day stay. For the vast majority of tourists planning holidays to Bangkok, Phuket, or Krabi, this 30-day window is more than sufficient. The decision provides clear and stable guidelines for anyone planning a trip in the near future.
A Reversal of a Controversial Plan
This announcement comes after weeks of confusion in the travel community. In May 2026, the Thai government had initially approved a proposal to scrap the visa-free facility for India and 92 other nations altogether, which would have meant returning to a paid Visa on Arrival system. This news led to significant uncertainty and a reported drop in tourist arrivals from India, a key market for Thailand's tourism industry. Realising the negative economic impact, the government has now reversed that decision, opting instead to modify the existing scheme rather than cancel it.
Why The Change to 30 Days?
The shift from a 60-day to a 30-day stay is a balancing act. Thai authorities stated the new limit better aligns with the actual travel behaviour of Indian tourists, who on average stay for about 7 to 10 days per trip. At the same time, the government has been looking to tighten immigration controls and prevent the misuse of long-stay visa exemptions for non-tourism activities. The 30-day policy is seen as a compromise that supports the vital tourism sector while addressing national security and immigration concerns.
What This Means For Your Travel Plans
For most holidaymakers, the change has little practical impact. A 30-day stay allows ample time for everything from a short city break to an extensive island-hopping adventure. However, if you are planning a longer trip, such as for work, extended exploration, or visiting family for more than a month, you will now need to apply for an appropriate visa in advance through a Thai embassy or consulate. The visa-free scheme is strictly for tourism purposes up to the 30-day limit. Check the official Royal Thai Embassy website for details on longer-stay visas.
Your Pre-Travel Checklist
While you don't need a visa sticker in your passport before you fly, you still need to have your documents in order for a smooth entry. The requirements for visa-exempt entry remain largely the same. Ensure you have a passport with at least six months of validity from your date of entry. You will also need to show proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket departing within 30 days, evidence of accommodation for your stay, and proof of sufficient funds. Additionally, all foreign travellers are generally required to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before their trip.
