What 'Luxury' Looks Like for Pets
In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, a growing number of pet boarding facilities are redefining what it means to leave a pet behind while travelling. These are not just places for safekeeping; they are full-service hotels designed for maximum
comfort and care. Many offer climate-controlled private suites instead of cages, complete with memory foam beds and sometimes even Alexa-enabled devices for remote interaction. The amenities often mirror those of a human resort: dedicated play areas, swimming pools for hydrotherapy and fun, and professional grooming salons offering everything from standard baths to breed-specific styling. Some establishments have in-house bakeries for gourmet treats and cafes where pets and their parents can socialise. For owners, the biggest luxury is peace of mind, often facilitated by 24/7 webcam access allowing them to check in on their furry family members from anywhere in the world.
The Rise of the 'Pet Parent'
This boom is fuelled by a significant cultural shift known as pet humanisation. Across urban India, pets are increasingly seen not as animals, but as integral family members, often referred to as 'fur babies' or children. According to a 2024 TGM Research report, 57% of Indian pet owners consider their pets to be family. This change is driven by several socioeconomic factors, including the rise of nuclear families, single-person households, and dual-income-no-kids (DINK) couples. In the isolation that can accompany busy urban life, pets offer crucial companionship and emotional support. As a result, these 'pet parents' are more than willing to spend on premium products and services that ensure their companions' happiness and well-being, mirroring the care they would give any other family member.
Peace of Mind Comes at a Price
This premium level of care comes with a corresponding price tag. While basic kennel services might cost a few hundred rupees per day, luxury boarding can be significantly more expensive. Depending on the city and the level of luxury, rates for high-end pet hotels can range from ₹1,500 to over ₹3,000 per night. These costs cover the spacious accommodation, personalised attention, specialised diets, and recreational activities provided. For many working professionals and frequent travellers, the expense is a worthwhile investment. It buys them the freedom to travel for work or leisure without the guilt or anxiety of leaving their pet in a less-than-ideal environment. The growing demand indicates that a significant segment of the urban population sees this not as an extravagance, but as a necessary expense for a cherished family member.
A Market with Momentum
The Indian pet care market is expanding rapidly, with the pet boarding services segment alone valued at over USD 300 million in 2024 and projected to grow significantly. This growth is no longer confined to the largest metros. As awareness and disposable incomes rise, demand for quality pet care is emerging in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities as well. This expansion points to a broader, more permanent change in Indian society's relationship with its companion animals. The industry is responding with increasing specialisation, offering everything from pet-friendly travel options to dedicated pet insurance and physiotherapy. However, the rapid growth has also led to calls for better regulation to ensure standardised quality and safety across the hundreds of new facilities popping up.
