The vital corridor connecting India's tech capital, Bengaluru, with its financial hub, Mumbai, welcomes a new era of overnight travel. The much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper Express has officially commenced its commercial operations.
A Landmark Launch for South India
Following an inaugural
special run on November 1, 2026, the regular commercial service for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express has now begun, marking a significant upgrade in rail connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra. The service, operated by the South Western Railway, was flagged off by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw from Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru. This is the first Vande Bharat sleeper service for southern India and is expected to offer a modern, comfortable, and faster overnight travel option. The train will run six days a week, providing a consistent and reliable link for business travellers, families, and tourists.
Schedule, Timings, and Stops
The train operates under numbers 27651 (Mumbai to Bengaluru) and 27652 (Bengaluru to Mumbai). Train 27652 departs from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and arrives at CSMT Mumbai at 11:55 AM the next day. In the return direction, Train 27651 leaves CSMT Mumbai at 8:10 PM and reaches SMVT Bengaluru at 12:00 PM the following day. The service from Mumbai runs every day except Tuesday, while the Bengaluru service runs every day except Monday. The train has eight designated halts between the two metropolises: Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, and Kalyan, connecting key towns across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
Experience a New Class of Comfort
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed from the ground up to enhance overnight journeys. The 16-coach train consists of one AC First Class, four AC 2-Tier, and eleven AC 3-Tier coaches, accommodating a total of 823 passengers. Unlike refurbished trains, these coaches feature ergonomically designed, better-cushioned berths, improved soundproofing for a quieter ride, and sensor-based ambient lighting. Amenities include automatic doors, bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps, CCTV cameras for enhanced security, and the KAVACH anti-collision system. The train's design allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration, contributing to a smoother, jerk-free experience.
Fares and Booking Information
Ticket bookings for the new service are open through the IRCTC website and computerised reservation counters. The fare structure is tiered by class. For the full journey from Bengaluru to Mumbai, the indicative fare is approximately ₹4,450 for AC First Class, ₹3,630 for AC 2nd Tier, and ₹2,810 for AC 3rd Tier. These prices are dynamic and may vary based on catering choices and other applicable charges. This positions the Vande Bharat Sleeper as a premium service, competing on comfort and time saving rather than just price.
How It Stacks Up Against Other Options
The most significant advantage of the Vande Bharat Sleeper is the time saved. It is set to be the fastest train on the route than covering the distance in approximately $16$ hours. In comparison existing daily trains like the Udyan Express can take between $22$ to $24$ hours to complete the same journey. This saves passengers nearly six to eight hours of transit time. While a direct flight is much faster taking around two hours the Vande Bharat Sleeper offers a compelling alternative by eliminating airport related travel time and hassles while providing a comfortable space to sleep overnight effectively saving on a hotel bill for one night. It offers a more modern experience than existing premium trains like the Rajdhani with features specifically designed for sleeper comfort.
