of anonymous experts in the same field. This is known as single-blind or double-blind review. In a single-blind model, the reviewers know who the authors are, but the authors don't know who the reviewers are. In a double-blind system, both identities are concealed. The goal has always been to allow for honest, unbiased feedback, free from fear of professional reprisal or personal influence. These experts check the methodology, validate the conclusions, and suggest improvements. Their feedback, however, has historically remained private, seen only by the editor and the author.

Open peer review is an umbrella term for a variety of models that make the review process more transparent. There isn't one single, universally agreed-upon definition, but these models often include one or more key traits. The most common are 'open identities,' where reviewers and authors know who each other are; 'open reports,' where the reviewer comments and author responses are published alongside the final article; and 'open participation,' which allows the wider scientific community to comment. Journals like PLOS, eLife, and various titles from publishers like BMJ and Nature have adopted forms of open peer review, signalling a significant cultural shift.

The headline feature of this open approach is the creation of a permanent, public record of the intellectual discussion that shapes a paper. Instead of the final article appearing as a finished, untouchable product, readers can see the entire journey. They can read the initial critiques from reviewers, the authors' point-by-point rebuttals, and any subsequent revisions. This published history turns a static publication into a dynamic conversation. It reveals the questions, debates, and clarifications that occurred before the research was formally accepted. For anyone reading the study, this provides invaluable context, showing which parts were rigorously challenged and how the authors defended their work.
The Benefits of Added Sunshine
Proponents argue that transparency fosters accountability and improves the quality of science. When reviewers know their names will be attached to their comments, they may be more likely to provide constructive, thorough, and polite feedback. It discourages lazy or overly harsh critiques that can sometimes occur under the shield of anonymity. Furthermore, it allows reviewers to receive public credit for their intellectual labour, which is often a thankless and invisible part of academic life. Potential Roadblocks to Openness
Despite its advantages, the move to open peer review is not without challenges. A primary concern is that junior researchers or those in hierarchical fields might be hesitant to openly criticise the work of senior, more powerful scientists for fear of professional retaliation. Some studies and surveys suggest that many academics are still unwilling to sign their reviews, preferring the protection of anonymity. There's also a debate over whether open reviews are truly more rigorous. Some critics contend that reviewers might soften their criticism to avoid conflict, potentially leading to a decrease in scholarly rigour. Finding a balance that encourages both honesty and accountability remains a key challenge for journals implementing these new models.
