They are designed to spot suspicious patterns that indicate data harvesting or malicious activity, even from previously trusted add-ons.

Ironically, the recent boom in generative AI has created a new wave of privacy-invasive extensions. Add-ons that promise to summarize articles, draft emails, or interact with chatbots often require the broadest permissions to function, as they need to read all the content on your screen. Studies have shown that many of these popular AI extensions collect personally identifiable information. Before installing the latest AI helper, check its privacy policy and reviews from trusted tech sources. A convincing name and a “Featured” badge in the web store are not enough to prove an extension is safe.
