Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) Becomes Fully Operational
A major development in 2026 is the completion of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the final three sections, covering 326 kilometres. These crucial links include New Sanand (North) to Makarpura,
New Umbergaon to New Saphale, and New Saphale to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). With these sections commissioned, the entire freight corridor becomes fully operational, creating a dedicated high-speed channel for goods transport. This will significantly reduce logistics costs, decongest the busy Mumbai railway network, and ensure faster movement of export-import cargo between industrial hubs in Gujarat and the country's largest port.
Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway: A New Economic Artery
The highly anticipated Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, a 109-km greenfield project, is now operational in 2026 after its inauguration on March 31. This four-lane, access-controlled highway, officially designated NH-751, has drastically cut travel time between Ahmedabad and the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) from over two hours to about 45 minutes. The expressway is a critical component of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) and is designed to fuel economic activity in India's first greenfield smart city. Its opening is set to boost industrial mobility, logistics, and real estate investment along the entire corridor, also providing a vital link to the upcoming Dholera International Airport.
Major Upgrades on National Highway 48
National Highway 48, a lifeline for road transport in the state, is seeing substantial upgrades in 2026. Key projects with foundation stones laid this year include the six-laning of the Kamrej-Chalthan section and the construction of additional bridges over the Tapi and Narmada rivers on the busy Vadodara-Surat section. To enhance safety and ease traffic flow, new six-lane flyovers at identified black spots like Kandari Chokdi and Luvara Patia on the Vadodara-Surat stretch will also be inaugurated. Furthermore, new grade-separated structures at the Abhava, Mindhola, and Khajod junctions on NH-53 are part of the nearly ₹1,780 crore push to modernize the state's highway network.
Expanding the Rail Network: Vadodara-Ratlam and More
The railway network is undergoing significant expansion to increase both passenger and freight capacity. A major project kicking off is the addition of third and fourth railway lines between Vadodara and Ratlam, covering 259 km. This initiative aims to ease congestion on the critical Delhi-Mumbai route. Other key railway projects for which foundation stones are being laid include the gauge conversion of the Miyagam Karjan-Choranda-Malsar section and the doubling of the 33-km Vishwamitri-Dabhoi line, which is vital for connectivity to the Statue of Unity. A new passenger train between Vadodara and Tanda Road is also being launched, connecting tribal areas of Alirajpur to the national network.
Future Connectivity: The Sarkhej-Dholera Rail Corridor
Looking ahead, plans are firming up for another significant rail project. In 2026, Western Railway invited bids to appoint a design consultant for a new broad gauge double-line railway corridor between Sarkhej and Dholera. This proposed 134-km network will not only connect Ahmedabad to the Dholera SIR but also include spur lines to the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal and the new Dholera International Airport. While still in the planning and design phase, this project highlights the long-term strategy to create a multi-modal transport ecosystem around Gujarat's emerging economic hubs.
