A Leap in Passenger Comfort
The new Vande Bharat sleeper is a significant upgrade from existing long-distance trains. Each 16-coach trainset is designed to accommodate around 823 passengers across three classes: AC First, AC Two-Tier, and AC Three-Tier. Passengers can look forward
to berths with extra cushioning, surpassing the comfort levels of even the Rajdhani Express. The design includes ergonomically improved ladders for easier access to upper berths and integrated reading lights with USB charging ports. For the first time, passengers in AC First class will have access to a hot shower facility. The train also features sensor-based lighting, automatic plug doors, and fully sealed gangways to provide a quieter, dust-free travel experience.
Engineered for Speed and Safety
Beyond comfort, the Vande Bharat sleeper is built for performance. It is designed to operate at a maximum speed of 160 kmph, with trial speeds reaching up to 180 kmph. This is possible due to its self-propelled trainset design, which allows for quicker acceleration and deceleration compared to traditional locomotive-hauled trains. Safety has been a primary focus, with the train's stainless steel body adhering to high crashworthiness standards. It is equipped with the indigenous 'Kavach' anti-collision system, advanced fire safety measures, and CCTV cameras throughout the coaches to ensure passenger security.
The All-Important Trial Phase
Before these new trains can welcome passengers, they must undergo a series of mandatory trials. The prototype, manufactured by firms like BEML and ICF, is handed over to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The RDSO conducts exhaustive tests to evaluate the train's performance, safety, and stability under various conditions. These trials include oscillation tests to check ride quality at high speeds, emergency braking distance assessments, and performance analysis on different railway sections. These tests have been conducted on routes like Mahoba-Khajuraho and Ahmedabad-Mumbai. Only after the RDSO provides its final certification and the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) gives the nod will the train be cleared for commercial operation.
The Future Rollout Plan
Indian Railways has ambitious plans for the Vande Bharat sleeper. Following the successful trial of the prototype, the manufacturing of more rakes is scheduled to ramp up. Contracts have been awarded for the production of hundreds of new sleeper trainsets. The first commercial service was launched in early 2026, and new routes are already being added. Recently, new services were announced to connect major hubs like Mumbai–Bengaluru and Delhi–Varanasi, aiming to significantly reduce overnight travel times and offer a competitive alternative to air travel for business and leisure travellers alike. This expansion is a key part of the vision to modernise the rail network and enhance connectivity across the nation.
