Choose Your Drying Zone Wisely
The first step is to designate a specific room for drying clothes. An ideal space is one that can be closed off to the rest of the house, like a spare bedroom, study, or even a large, well-ventilated bathroom. Keeping the door closed concentrates the effect
of any fans or dehumidifiers you use. Avoid drying clothes in the main living areas or the bedroom you sleep in, as releasing large amounts of moisture into these spaces can increase overall household humidity and potentially lead to mould on walls and furniture. A room with a window is a bonus, but not essential if you have other methods for air circulation.
Master the Art of Airflow
Moisture can only leave your clothes if the surrounding air is able to carry it away. This makes airflow the single most important factor in indoor drying. Simply hanging clothes on a rack in still air is ineffective, as the air immediately around the fabric becomes saturated. Use a ceiling fan or a pedestal fan aimed at the clothes rack to keep the air moving. This constant circulation replaces the damp air near the clothes with drier air from elsewhere in the room, dramatically speeding up evaporation. For even better results, create cross-ventilation by opening a window slightly and using a fan to push the humid air outwards.
The Power of Dehumidification
In peak monsoon humidity, which can exceed 80% in many Indian cities, a fan alone may not be enough. This is where a dehumidifier becomes a powerful ally. A dehumidifier actively pulls moisture from the air, collecting it as water in a tank. By lowering the room's overall humidity, it creates a much drier environment that encourages clothes to release their moisture faster. Combining a dehumidifier with a fan is considered the gold standard for indoor drying, capable of drying a load of cotton clothes in 4 to 9 hours instead of 18 to 24. Running an air conditioner also has a dehumidifying effect and can be a good alternative if you don't have a dedicated dehumidifier.
Smarter Laundry Day Habits
Fighting monsoon dampness starts at the washing machine. Use the highest spin cycle your machine offers to mechanically remove as much water as possible before hanging. When you place clothes on the drying rack, give each item a good shake to open up the fibres. Crucially, leave ample space—at least a few inches—between each garment. Overcrowding a rack traps pockets of moist air and is a primary cause of that musty mildew smell. Consider washing smaller loads more frequently rather than one large load to ensure everything has room to breathe.
Budget-Friendly Moisture Absorbers
While an electric dehumidifier is highly effective, you can also use passive, low-cost methods to help control moisture, especially in smaller, enclosed spaces like wardrobes. Bowls of rock salt, baking soda, or activated charcoal can be placed in the drying room or inside closets to absorb ambient moisture. Calcium chloride, often sold for use in pools, is another powerful desiccant that can be placed in a perforated container over a bowl to collect water. You can also make your own reusable desiccant bags using old socks or small cloth bags filled with silica gel (which can be bought or saved from product packaging). These won't dry a full load of laundry on their own, but they help reduce the overall humidity that contributes to dampness.
