Understanding the Groundbreaking Route
The long-awaited Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is a 272-km railway line that finally connects the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India's rail network. This ambitious project navigates the challenging Himalayan terrain with numerous tunnels
and bridges. For tourists, this means you can now board a train in Jammu and travel directly to Srinagar, a journey that takes approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes. This direct connectivity eliminates the previously unavoidable, and often arduous, road journey, making travel to the valley significantly more accessible and reliable, especially during harsh weather conditions.
An Engineering Marvel and a Visual Treat
The journey itself is a destination. The route features some of India's most impressive engineering feats, including the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, the country's first cable-stayed rail bridge. To maximize this incredible visual experience, Indian Railways has introduced Vistadome coaches on this route. These special coaches feature large glass windows, a transparent roof, and rotating seats, offering panoramic, uninterrupted views of the stunning mountains, deep valleys, and winding rivers. This turns a simple commute into an unforgettable scenic tour.
Your Chariot Awaits: The Vande Bharat Express
Several Vande Bharat Express services now operate on this line, connecting Jammu Tawi with Srinagar. These modern, high-speed trains offer a comfortable and quick journey. The services were first launched between Katra and Srinagar in June 2025 and were later extended to Jammu Tawi in April 2026 due to immense popularity. In fact, demand has been so high that a third Vande Bharat service was recently approved for the route, and the number of coaches per train has been increased. These trains have AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car classes, with on-board catering options available.
Key Stations and Tourist Gateways
The train makes several key stops that serve as gateways to popular destinations. The main terminuses are Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. En route stops include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal. The Katra station is a crucial hub for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine. From Srinagar, travellers can easily access famous tourist spots like Dal Lake, while other stations along the line, like Anantnag and Baramulla, provide easier access to destinations like Pahalgam and Gulmarg.
How to Book Your Tickets
Booking your journey on the Kashmir train is straightforward. The most convenient method is through the official IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. You can also book tickets at railway reservation counters. When booking online, you will need to use the station codes: JAT for Jammu Tawi and SINA for Srinagar. Given the high demand and full occupancy since its launch, it is highly advisable to book your tickets well in advance to secure a seat, especially if you wish to travel in a Vistadome coach.
Tips for a Smooth Journey
To make the most of your trip, keep a few things in mind. Pack according to the season, as Kashmir's weather can be unpredictable. Even in summer, it's wise to have a light jacket. Arrive at the station with some time to spare for security checks, which may include bag scans and ID verification. Once you arrive at your destination station, such as Srinagar or Katra, pre-paid taxi services are available to take you to your hotel or next destination. This new rail link not only saves time but also provides a safer and more economical travel option compared to flights or road transport.
