A New Space Age Dawns
India's space story, long synonymous with the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) landmark achievements like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan, is entering a transformative new chapter. While ISRO continues to push the frontiers of exploration, the commercial
space race is being joined by a powerful new force: homegrown startups. This isn't a case of privatisation replacing a national institution, but rather the strategic opening of a sector to accelerate growth. Since the government initiated reforms in 2020, the number of space startups has skyrocketed from a handful to over 400. This surge signals a fundamental shift from a government-led model to a dynamic public-private partnership, positioning India to capture a much larger slice of the burgeoning global space economy.
The Policy That Unlocked The Stars
The catalyst for this boom was the Indian Space Policy of 2023. This landmark legislation was designed to unlock the sector by clearly defining the roles of various entities. It positions ISRO to focus on advanced research, deep-space missions, and national security projects, while encouraging private companies, or Non-Governmental Entities (NGEs), to take over routine operations like satellite manufacturing and commercial launches. A key component of this new architecture is the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe). Acting as a single-window agency, IN-SPACe is responsible for authorising, promoting, and supervising the activities of private players. It facilitates access to ISRO’s world-class testing facilities and nurtures technology transfers, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for ambitious new companies. Further liberalisation of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) rules has also made the sector more attractive to global investors.
Meet The Trailblazers
This new policy landscape has allowed several startups to make significant strides. Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace made history in July 2026 with the successful orbital launch of Vikram-1, making India only the third country, after the US and China, to have a privately developed rocket reach orbit. Chennai's Agnikul Cosmos is another major player, notable for its 3D-printed rocket engines and for establishing its own private launchpad at ISRO's Sriharikota spaceport. In the satellite domain, Bengaluru-based Pixxel is deploying a constellation of the world's most advanced hyperspectral imaging satellites, which can provide data for agriculture, climate monitoring, and more. Other startups like Dhruva Space are focusing on satellite platforms, while Bellatrix Aerospace is innovating in greener propulsion systems. These companies aren't just building hardware; they are creating the building blocks of a diversified space economy.
From Rockets to Revenue
The innovation isn't just in engineering; it's in the business models. Startups are moving beyond simply launching rockets to offering a full suite of services. This includes satellite-as-a-service, where clients can lease satellite capabilities without owning the hardware, and downstream data analytics, which turns raw satellite imagery into actionable intelligence for various industries. By developing cost-effective, modular, and reusable launch technologies, companies like Skyroot and Agnikul are democratising access to space, particularly for the booming small satellite market. This focus on cost reduction and reusability is critical for competing on the global stage against established international players. The goal is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem where Indian companies can build, launch, and operate satellites, keeping the entire value chain within the country.
An Orbit of Collaboration
The rise of the private sector allows ISRO to hand over the baton for routine commercial launches and satellite manufacturing, freeing up its immense talent and resources for more ambitious scientific and strategic missions like the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program and future interplanetary exploration. This symbiotic relationship is already bearing fruit. ISRO provides critical support, including access to launchpads and tracking networks, while private firms bring agility, innovation, and commercial focus. Experts believe this public-private synergy is essential. It allows the nation to build capabilities at scale and speed, integrating government, industry, and academia into a cohesive ecosystem. Even the migration of some ISRO talent to the private sector is seen as a net positive, strengthening the domestic industry with invaluable experience.
