Prioritise Paw Care After Every Walk
Your pet’s paws are their first point of contact with the damp, muddy world outside. Puddles and wet grass can harbour a host of bacteria and fungi, leading to painful infections between their toes. Make it a non-negotiable habit to clean and thoroughly
dry your pet’s paws after every single walk, even short ones. Use a soft towel and pay special attention to the area between the paw pads. You can use lukewarm water for cleaning, but ensure they are completely dry afterwards. A sprinkle of antifungal powder, as recommended by your vet, can also prevent moisture-related skin issues.
Keep Their Coat Dry and Clean
A perpetually damp coat is a breeding ground for fungal and bacterial skin infections, which are extremely common during the monsoon. While a cute raincoat can help, it doesn't offer complete protection. The real work begins indoors. After any exposure to rain, towel-dry your pet thoroughly. For dogs with thick or long fur, a quick blast with a hairdryer on a low-heat setting can be a lifesaver. Regular grooming is also crucial. Brushing removes loose fur and tangles that trap moisture, allowing their skin to breathe and reducing the risk of hotspots and other painful dermatitis.
Dodge the Puddles and Stagnant Water
As tempting as it might be for a playful dog to splash around, puddles are a serious health hazard. Stagnant water is often contaminated with everything from garbage and pollutants to animal waste, carrying dangerous bacteria and viruses. It’s a primary source of leptospirosis, a severe bacterial disease that can affect both pets and humans. It can also contain parasites like Giardia that cause severe gastrointestinal distress. During walks, keep your pet on a short leash and steer them clear of any standing water to prevent them from drinking it or soaking their paws in it.
Adjust Their Diet for Digestion
The damp and humid weather can sometimes slow down a pet’s digestive system. Furthermore, reduced physical activity due to fewer walks can also contribute to digestive issues. Consider switching to lighter, easily digestible food during this season. Adding fibre-rich foods like boiled pumpkin can aid digestion. It's also a good time to focus on immunity. Consult your veterinarian about adding immunity-boosting supplements to their diet. Ensure their drinking water is always fresh and clean, as waterborne diseases are rampant. Boiling their drinking water is a simple and effective preventive measure.
Step Up Your Pest Control Game
The monsoon is peak season for ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes. These pests aren't just annoying; they are carriers of dangerous diseases. Ticks can cause tick fever, while mosquitoes can transmit heartworm. Fleas can lead to intense itching, allergies, and tapeworm infestations. Check your pet’s fur for ticks daily, especially after they’ve been outdoors or interacted with other animals. Most importantly, ensure you are up-to-date with their monthly vet-prescribed tick and flea prevention treatment. This is your most effective line of defence against vector-borne illnesses.
Create a Calm Haven During Storms
The loud clap of thunder and bright flashes of lightning can be terrifying for many pets, causing severe anxiety. This can manifest as hiding, shivering, excessive barking or panting. Create a safe, comfortable den for them where they can retreat during a storm—a crate with a blanket over it or a quiet corner of a room works well. Close the curtains to block out the lightning flashes and play some calming music or turn on the TV to muffle the sound of thunder. Pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps can also be effective tools for particularly anxious pets.
Keep Them Engaged Indoors
Cancelled walks and less time outdoors can lead to a bored, restless, and potentially destructive pet. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. Invest in puzzle toys, snuffle mats, and treat-dispensing toys to keep their minds engaged. A 15-minute training session teaching them new tricks or reinforcing old commands is a fantastic way to burn mental energy. A simple game of hide-and-seek with their favourite toy can also do wonders to beat the rainy-day blues and strengthen your bond.
