Nandi Hills: The Classic Sunrise Drive
Nandi Hills is arguably the most popular sunrise spot near Bangalore, located approximately 60 kilometres away. To beat the crowds and catch the first light, a pre-dawn start is non-negotiable. The most reliable way to travel is by private car or motorcycle.
The drive via NH44 (Bellary Road) typically takes about 90 minutes in the early morning. For a weekend trip, aim to leave Bangalore by 2:30 AM to 3:00 AM. On weekdays, a 3:30 AM departure should suffice. The main gate officially opens at 6:00 AM, but on weekends, authorities may open it as early as 5:30 AM to manage the rush. Arriving at the base by 4:00 AM to 4:15 AM gives you a good position in the queue and time for the trek up the 1,175 stone steps, which takes about 45 to 60 minutes. While KSRTC buses and trains go to the nearest town, Chikkaballapur, they do not run early enough for a sunrise mission, making private transport the only practical choice.
Skandagiri: The Mandatory Night Trek
Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, offers a more rugged trekking experience about 70 kilometres from Bangalore. Unlike Nandi Hills, reaching the Skandagiri summit for sunrise requires a night trek, which is regulated by the Karnataka Eco-Tourism board. It is mandatory to book your slot online in advance, as unregistered trekkers will be turned away. There are two time slots: a night/sunrise trek with check-in between 3:30 AM and 4:30 AM, and a day trek. For the sunrise, you must book the night slot. The trek itself is an 8-kilometre round trip of moderate difficulty and takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete. The most common route is to drive to Kalavara village, the base of the trek. To make the 3:30 AM check-in, you should plan to leave Bangalore around 1:30 AM. Many private operators offer packages that include transport from various points in Bangalore, which can be a convenient option. The trail is known for its famous 'sea of clouds' effect at dawn, making the planning and effort worthwhile.
Savandurga: The Monolith Challenge
Savandurga, considered one of Asia's largest monolith hills, is located around 60 kilometres from Bangalore via Magadi Road. The trek is challenging due to its steep, bare rock surface. There are two main trails: Biligudda (the white hill) and Karigudda (the black hill). The Biligudda trail is the one open to the public and is considered moderately difficult. To catch the sunrise from the top, you must start your trek well before 5:00 AM. The climb takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to reach the summit. Given this timing, you should leave Bangalore no later than 2:30 AM to 3:00 AM. The base of the trek starts near the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple. Like Skandagiri, trekking at Savandurga is now regulated, and you may need to book a permit online through the Karnataka Eco-Tourism portal, so it is crucial to check for the latest rules before you go. The descent can be tricky, so good trekking shoes with a solid grip are essential. Public transport is not feasible for a sunrise trek.
Essential Tips for Your Sunrise Trek
Regardless of which hill you choose, a successful sunrise trek depends on preparation. First, always check the latest rules on official websites like Karnataka Eco-Tourism for permits and timings, as these can change. For night treks to Skandagiri or an early start at Savandurga, a headlamp or a good torch with extra batteries is crucial. Dress in layers, as the early morning will be cold, but the trek will warm you up. Carry at least 1-2 litres of water per person and some energy-boosting snacks. A good pair of trekking shoes with a strong grip is non-negotiable, especially for the rocky terrain of Savandurga and Skandagiri. Finally, travel in a group for safety and ensure your vehicle is in good condition for the pre-dawn journey on highways and winding roads.
