Why These Disruptions Are Happening
Across its vast network, Indian Railways is undertaking critical infrastructure upgrades to enhance safety and increase capacity. Many of the diversions scheduled for October are due to pre-non-interlocking (Pre-NI) and non-interlocking (NI) work. This
technical work is essential for modernising signalling systems and connecting new railway lines, such as the third line between Bina and Agasod stations. While these projects cause temporary inconvenience, they are crucial for the long-term goal of running more trains at higher speeds, improving punctuality, and ensuring safer journeys for millions of passengers. The works are often scheduled during periods with relatively lower passenger traffic to minimise widespread disruption, particularly avoiding major festive seasons like Diwali.
Key Diversions in West Central Railway
Due to yard remodelling and line connection work at Bina and Agasod stations, several long-distance trains will be diverted in October. The West Central Railway has confirmed that at least 17 services will run on alternate routes. For instance, Train No. 11703 Rewa-Dr Ambedkar Nagar Tri-Weekly Express will be diverted via Bina Malkhedi, Mahadevkhedi, Guna, and Maksi on October 8, 11, and 13. Similarly, the Rewanchal Express (Train No. 12185/12186) between Rewa and Rani Kamalapati will run via Katni, Jabalpur, and Itarsi from October 8 to 14. Passengers on the popular Bhopal-Jodhpur route (Train No. 14813/14814) will also face diversions, with the train running via Sant Hirdaram Nagar, Maksi, and Nagda from October 1 to 15.
Changes in Northern and East Central Zones
The Northern Railway zone frequently announces operational changes, and October will be no different. Work in the Danapur Railway Division of the East Central Railway is expected to affect train services passing through Bihar and West Bengal and those connecting to Delhi. Cancellations have been announced for several key routes. The Malda Town-New Delhi Express (Train No. 13413/13483) is slated for cancellation on multiple dates, including September 29 and October 3. Its return service from New Delhi (Train No. 13414/13484) will also be cancelled on select dates including October 1. Passengers traveling between Delhi and eastern India on these dates must look for alternatives.
Cancellations and Short Terminations
In addition to diversions, some trains will be fully cancelled or short-terminated, meaning they will end their journey before their final destination or start from an intermediate station. For example, recent operational works in the Delhi-NCR region led to the cancellation of multiple EMU and MEMU services, which are lifelines for daily commuters. Short-terminations can also affect long-distance trains, requiring passengers to make alternative arrangements for the last leg of their journey. Travellers should pay close attention to announcements regarding both cancellations and short-terminations, as these can significantly alter travel plans.
