A Room with a Panoramic View
Indian Railways' Vistadome coaches are designed for one purpose: to transform a simple train journey into a spectacular sightseeing experience. Attached to the Madurai–Guruvayur Express (16327/16328), this new air-conditioned coach brings that luxury
to one of South India’s most picturesque routes. It features enormous glass windows, a see-through glass roof, and seats that can rotate 180 degrees. This means you can always turn yourself to face the best views, whether it’s a cascading waterfall or a deep, forested valley. With a capacity of just 44 seats, it offers an exclusive and comfortable way to immerse yourself in nature. The coach is also equipped with modern amenities like Wi-Fi and an infotainment system, ensuring your journey is as comfortable as it is scenic.
The Legendary Ghat Section
The star of this journey is the historic Sengottai–Punalur railway line. First commissioned in 1904, this route was an engineering marvel of its time, carving a path through the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats to connect Travancore with Madras. After being closed for over eight years for gauge conversion, the line reopened, preserving its unique character. The journey takes you through dense forests, over a series of dramatic bridges, and through five major tunnels, including the famous Aryankavu pass and the Kotavasal Tunnel at the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The most iconic structure is the 13-Arch Bridge (Kannara Palam), a century-old architectural wonder that stands as a testament to the railway's rich heritage.
What You Will See
As the train chugs along the ghat section between Sengottai and Punalur, the Vistadome's large windows open up to a world of natural splendour. The route is particularly magical during and after the monsoon season when the landscape is a vibrant green and waterfalls are in full flow. You will be treated to views of misty mountains, winding rivers, and the rich biodiversity of the ghats. The train's timing is perfectly suited for sightseeing, passing through the most scenic parts of the forest in the afternoon, ensuring you have ample daylight to capture the beauty. It’s a journey that appeals to nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking for a peaceful escape into the heart of southern India’s pristine wilderness.
