The Allure of 'More Is More'
Sales are designed to create a sense of urgency and abundance. Brands know that offering a larger quantity for a seemingly lower price feels like a victory for the consumer. We're conditioned to believe that buying in bulk is inherently smarter and more
economical. This psychological pull can lead to impulse buys and a bathroom cabinet filled with products we don't need or can't use in time. The first step to smarter shopping is recognising this marketing tactic and pausing to ask a crucial question: is this really a better deal for me?
Become a Unit Price Expert
The true measure of a deal isn’t the final price, but the price per unit. This is the only way to accurately compare two differently sized products. To calculate it, simply divide the total price by the quantity (in millilitres, grams, or fluid ounces). For example, a 200ml bottle of face wash for ₹400 costs ₹2 per ml. A 'value' 500ml bottle for ₹800 might seem like a better deal, but the unit price is actually ₹1.60 per ml. In this case, the bulk buy offers genuine savings. However, sometimes a smaller, discounted item can have a lower unit price than its larger counterpart. Always do the quick math on your phone's calculator before deciding. Look for the net weight or volume, usually printed on the front or back of the packaging, to make your comparison.
The Expiration Clock Is Ticking
Cosmetics don't last forever, and buying in bulk can turn a great deal into expensive waste. Most beauty products have two shelf lives to consider. Unopened products can last for two to three years if stored correctly. However, once opened, the clock starts ticking much faster. Look for the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on the packaging—it looks like a tiny open jar with a number followed by 'M' (e.g., '12M'). This indicates the product should be used within that many months. Mascaras and liquid eyeliners may only last 3-6 months, while lotions and serums typically last 6-12 months. Using products past this date can be ineffective at best and cause skin irritation or infections at worst, as ingredients can degrade and bacteria can grow.
Will You Realistically Use It All?
A two-year supply of your favourite serum is only a good deal if you consistently use it. Be honest with yourself about your habits. Do you switch between multiple cleansers, or are you dedicated to one? Do you get tempted by new product launches? If you enjoy variety, buying in bulk might lock you into a single product for longer than you'd like, leading to boredom and waste. Before committing to a large volume, consider your actual consumption rate. If a 50ml serum lasts you three months, a 200ml bulk version will take a full year to finish. Make sure you love the product enough for that level of commitment.
Consider Your Storage Space
A large haul of beauty products requires proper storage to maintain its quality. Most skincare should be kept in a cool, dark, and dry place to prevent ingredients from breaking down prematurely. A steamy, sunlit bathroom is often the worst environment. Before you buy in bulk, think about whether you have a suitable drawer or cabinet to store your backup products. An oversized stash can also create clutter, making it harder to see what you own and leading you to forget about products until after they've expired. Sometimes, the convenience of a smaller collection outweighs the perceived savings of a bulk purchase.
