A New Wardrobe for the Moon
When astronauts of the Artemis III mission step onto the lunar surface, targeted for no earlier than 2027, they will be wearing the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU. Developed by Houston-based Axiom Space under a major NASA contract, these
suits represent the first major overhaul in moonwalking gear in over 50 years. Unlike the custom-made suits of the past, the AxEMU is designed to be highly adjustable, fitting a broad range of body types for both male and female astronauts. This modular approach is a key part of NASA's strategy to commercialize space services, relying on private industry partners to build the necessary hardware for living and working on and around the Moon. The partnership even extends to Italian luxury fashion house Prada, which collaborated with Axiom on the design of the outer layer, leveraging its expertise in advanced composite materials.
Designed for Unprecedented Flexibility
The single biggest upgrade is mobility. The Apollo suits, while a marvel for their time, were notoriously rigid. Pressurized like a balloon, they required constant muscle exertion from the astronauts just to bend a joint, leading to the famous 'bunny hop' gait and making simple tasks like picking up a rock incredibly taxing. The AxEMU changes all that. It incorporates advanced bearings and flexible joints at the waist, hips, knees, and shoulders. This allows astronauts to walk more naturally, squat down, twist at the waist, and even lift objects over their heads—movements that were nearly impossible for their Apollo predecessors. This enhanced range of motion is not just for comfort; it dramatically increases efficiency and safety, allowing astronauts to perform more complex scientific tasks and navigate the challenging terrain of the lunar south pole.
Beyond Mobility: A Modern Upgrade
The improvements go far beyond just flexible joints. The AxEMU is a complete, 21st-century system. The life support backpack is designed to support spacewalks of up to eight hours, a significant increase from the Apollo era, and includes the ability for in-suit nutrition. An advanced helmet system features mounted lights and a high-definition camera, giving mission control and the public a crystal-clear view of the lunar landscape. The boots are designed more like flexible hiking boots to handle the rugged, uneven ground of the Moon's south pole, a stark contrast to the rigid boots of the past. The entire suit is also better protected against the extreme temperatures—swinging from over 120°C in sunlight to below -150°C in shadow—and the abrasive, hazardous lunar dust that plagued the Apollo missions.
Enabling a New Era of Science
This new level of mobility and endurance is critical for the scientific goals of the Artemis program. NASA is targeting the Moon's south pole, an area believed to hold water ice in permanently shadowed craters. Exploring these regions and gathering samples requires astronauts to navigate treacherous terrain, kneel down to inspect rocks, and handle specialized tools with precision. The AxEMU is purpose-built for this kind of geological fieldwork. By reducing the physical toll on the astronauts and giving them a wider range of movement, the new suits will allow them to work more like field scientists on Earth. This will maximize the scientific return from each mission, helping to unlock the secrets of the Moon and prepare for the even greater challenge of sending humans to Mars.
