The post-pandemic surge in international travel has brought with it a renewed impatience for old-fashioned airport queues. For a growing number of Indian globetrotters, the focus has shifted from simply securing a visa to optimising the entire travel experience.
This means less time shuffling through lines and more time enjoying their destination. This desire for efficiency has fuelled a demand for access to programs and technologies that promise a quicker, smoother passage through international airports, reflecting a travel-savvy mindset that values time and a stress-free start to a trip.
The Gold Standard: Global Entry for the US
One of the most sought-after expedited clearance programs is Global Entry, offered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. India is one of a select few countries whose citizens are eligible to apply. This program allows pre-approved, low-risk travellers to enter the U.S. through automatic kiosks at major airports. Instead of a long wait for an immigration officer, members can scan their passport and fingerprints and be on their way in minutes. A significant added benefit is inclusion in the TSA PreCheck program, which provides faster security screening on flights within the United States. The application process involves online registration, background checks by both Indian and U.S. authorities, and an in-person interview.
India's Own Fast Track Program
India has also launched its own version, the Fast Track Immigration - Trusted Traveller Programme (FTI-TTP), modelled after schemes like Global Entry. Available for Indian nationals and OCI cardholders, this program allows users to bypass regular immigration queues at major Indian airports for both arrivals and departures. After an online registration and biometric submission process, approved travellers can use dedicated e-gates for clearance in seconds. This initiative, currently offered free of charge, is operational at key international airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, among others.
E-Gates and Biometric Passports: The Global Trend
Beyond specific programs, the rise of biometric e-passports is revolutionising border control worldwide. These passports contain a chip with the holder's information, enabling the use of automated e-gates at airports. Countries like the UAE and the UK have extensively deployed these systems. In Dubai, for example, registered travellers can pass through Smart Gates using facial recognition in seconds. While Indian citizens are not automatically eligible to use all e-gates everywhere, having a modern biometric passport is the first and most crucial step towards accessing these faster travel lanes as more countries expand eligibility.
Is It Worth the Effort?
For the frequent flyer, the business traveller, or anyone who simply detests queues, the answer is a resounding yes. While programs like Global Entry involve a non-refundable application fee and a potentially lengthy approval process, the time saved over its five-year membership can be substantial. The convenience of walking past long immigration lines after an exhausting long-haul flight is a luxury many are finding is worth the initial investment of time and money. For less frequent travellers, sticking to airports with modern e-gate infrastructure and ensuring you have an updated biometric passport can still significantly speed up the journey.
