The Game-Changer: Credit Cards on UPI
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionised payments in India, but it was traditionally linked to bank accounts. Now, you can link specific credit cards directly to your favourite UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. This feature
is primarily available for RuPay credit cards, a domestic card network. When you link a RuPay credit card, you can scan any merchant QR code and pay using your credit limit instead of your bank balance. This simple step is the foundation of our strategy, as it allows your everyday UPI transactions at merchant locations to start earning credit card reward points. The process is straightforward: in your UPI app, choose the option to add a credit card, select your bank, verify your card details with an OTP, and set a UPI PIN for your card.
Choose Your Weapon: The Right Travel Credit Card
Not all credit cards are created equal. To earn flights, you need a card that either offers direct air miles or has a flexible points system that allows transfers to airline loyalty programs. For UPI-based earning, a RuPay card is essential, and several banks now offer them with reward benefits. Beyond UPI, for larger, non-UPI spending, consider premium travel cards. Co-branded cards like the Air India SBI Signature or the IndiGo Kotak XL are excellent if you are loyal to a single airline. For more flexibility, cards like HDFC Infinia, Axis Atlas, and HSBC TravelOne allow you to transfer your points to multiple airline partners like Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer), British Airways (Avios), and Vistara. These cards often come with high joining fees but offer superior reward rates, lounge access, and better point conversion ratios.
Strategy is Everything: Maximise Your Earnings
Simply spending isn't enough; you must spend smartly. The key to accumulating points quickly is to take advantage of accelerated rewards. Many credit cards offer bonus points (from 2x to 10x) on specific categories like dining, groceries, or travel bookings made through the bank's portal, such as HDFC's SmartBuy. Identify which categories your chosen card rewards most and try to channel your spending there. For instance, use your travel card for all flight and hotel bookings. Use your RuPay credit card for as many UPI merchant payments as possible to capture rewards on smaller, everyday purchases. Be aware that some spending categories like fuel, wallet loads, rent payments, and utility bills are often excluded from reward programs or earn at a lower rate, so always check your card's terms and conditions.
The Conversion Process: From Points to Miles
Accumulating points is only half the battle. The real value is unlocked when you convert them into airline miles. This process typically happens on your credit card's online banking portal. You'll navigate to the rewards section, select 'Points/Miles Transfer', and choose your preferred airline partner. You will need to link your frequent flyer account with the airline to your bank account once. Transfer ratios are critical. A 1:1 ratio (one reward point equals one air mile) is excellent, but ratios like 5:2 or 10:4 are more common. For example, with a 5:2 ratio, 10,000 credit card points would become 4,000 air miles. Transfers are not always instant; they can take anywhere from a few hours to several business days, so plan ahead.
The 'Free' Flight: A Reality Check
The term "free flight" is slightly misleading. The miles you redeem typically cover only the base fare of the ticket. You are still responsible for paying taxes, airport fees, and carrier-imposed surcharges, which can be substantial, especially on international flights. Furthermore, award seats are limited. Airlines only release a certain number of seats for redemption on each flight, so you need to be flexible with your travel dates. Booking well in advance or at the last minute can sometimes yield better availability. The best value from your miles often comes from booking business class or first-class tickets, where the cash price is extremely high, making the value per mile you redeem much greater.
Avoiding the Traps: Play the Game Wisely
Chasing rewards can be a double-edged sword. The biggest mistake is carrying a balance on your credit card. The high-interest charges, often between 30% and 48% annually, will quickly erase the value of any rewards you earn. Always pay your bill in full and on time. Also, be mindful of high annual fees on premium cards and ensure the benefits you receive (like lounge access, bonus points) outweigh the cost. Finally, don't spend more than you normally would just to earn points. The goal is to get rewarded for your existing spending, not to inflate it.
