What Is the Free Visa Scheme?
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a pilot program specifically for Indian tourists. It is not a universal visa-free travel policy, but rather a promotion that waives the visa fee for eligible travellers, saving
approximately $77 per person. This initiative is designed to make holidaying in the emirate more affordable and straightforward. However, it's a limited-time offer, valid for travel between August 1 and October 31, 2026, and is capped at the first 20,000 applicants. The key thing to remember is that this is not a standalone visa you can apply for independently; it is tied to booking a complete holiday package.
How to Qualify for the Free Visa
Eligibility for the free visa offer is very specific and requires travellers to meet several conditions. You cannot simply book a flight and expect a free visa upon arrival. To qualify, you must be an Indian passport holder whose travel originates in India. The most critical requirement is that you must book an Abu Dhabi holiday package through a participating travel partner, such as Akbar Travels. This package must include both a return flight from India and a hotel stay of at least three consecutive nights in Abu Dhabi. Booking a flight or hotel separately will not make you eligible for this particular promotion. The travel partner will handle the visa application process on your behalf as part of the package deal.
Understanding Eligible Flights and Hotels
The phrase 'eligible flights and hotels' in the context of this offer doesn't refer to a specific, published list of airlines or properties that you can choose from independently. Instead, eligibility is determined by the holiday packages curated by the approved travel agents. When you contact a participating partner to book your trip, they will present you with package options that already meet the requirements. These packages will bundle a return flight from India on a partner airline with a minimum three-night stay at a qualifying Abu Dhabi hotel. Your choice of flights and hotels will be from the selection offered within these pre-approved holiday deals. Therefore, the first step is to connect with a designated travel agent to explore the available packages.
What If You Don't Qualify? Other Visa Routes
If your travel plans don't align with the package deal or the travel dates, there are still other straightforward visa options for Indian citizens. Many travellers may be eligible for a visa on arrival. This applies to Indian passport holders who also hold a valid visa or residence permit from the USA, United Kingdom, or an EU member state. This 14-day visa is issued upon arrival for a fee of around AED 100. For those simply transiting through Abu Dhabi with a long layover, airlines like Etihad facilitate 48-hour or 96-hour transit visas. These allow you to leave the airport and explore the city, but they must be applied for in advance and typically involve a fee.
Travel Hack: The Etihad Stopover Program
Separate from the DCT's free visa offer is another fantastic deal for travellers: the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Stopover. If you book your multi-city flights directly with Etihad, the airline offers a complimentary hotel stay for one or two nights in select 3- and 4-star hotels. This is an excellent way to break up a long journey and experience Abu Dhabi for free. It is important to note that this program only covers the hotel accommodation; it does not include the visa. If you book an Etihad stopover, you will still need to arrange your own entry permit, either by applying for a paid transit visa through the airline or by qualifying for a visa on arrival based on the criteria mentioned earlier.
