What on Earth Is an AI Agent?
First, let's clear up the jargon. An AI agent is not just a smarter chatbot. While a tool like ChatGPT responds to your prompts and then stops, an agent is designed to take a goal and execute it. [5, 6] Think of it as the difference between an assistant
who can answer a question and a subordinate who can complete a multi-step project. You give the agent an objective—like 'plan a weekend trip to Goa for two under ₹25,000' or 'find the best-rated mobile phone under ₹20,000 and order it'—and it works autonomously to achieve it. [4, 6] This involves reasoning, making a plan, using tools (like accessing websites or your calendar), and taking action until the task is complete, all with minimal human intervention. [4, 19]
India's Unique Appetite for Agents
This isn't a distant, global phenomenon; it's happening right here, and faster than almost anywhere else. A recent Adobe report found that Indian consumers show the strongest interest in personal AI agents in the entire Asia Pacific region. [3, 8] A remarkable 60% of Indians are interested in creating their own personal AI agent. [3, 11, 14] This enthusiasm is already translating into behaviour. Around 65% of Indian consumers already use AI for personalised product recommendations, and 62% are open to shopping via a virtual AI concierge. [8, 12] This readiness suggests a massive cultural shift towards handing over digital tasks, from customer service interactions to online shopping. [3, 11] More than half of Indian consumers say they would happily interact with a brand's AI agent or even let their personal agent communicate with a company's human representative on their behalf. [3, 8]
The ONDC and India Stack Advantage
India's digital public infrastructure, often called the 'India Stack,' provides a unique foundation for this agent-led economy to flourish. [21] Systems like UPI (for payments), Aadhaar (for identity), and ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) create open, interoperable platforms that AI agents can plug into. [21, 25] Imagine an agent that not only finds the best deal for a product but can seamlessly place the order through ONDC and complete the payment via UPI, all without you opening a single app. AI is already being used to help small Kirana store owners get onto the ONDC network by automating complex tasks like creating product catalogues. [23, 20] This foundation could allow individuals and small businesses to deploy agents with capabilities that were once only available to large tech platforms. [25]
Who Is Building This Future?
The race to build these agents is on. Globally, tech giants are all-in. In India, the ecosystem includes large IT service firms like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, which are developing enterprise-scale agentic AI platforms for their clients. [9, 17] Infosys has its Topaz platform, and Cognizant has its Neuro AI platform, both designed to help businesses build autonomous workflows. [9] Alongside these giants, a vibrant startup scene is emerging, with companies like KOGO AI, Gupshup, and Floworks developing specialised agents for everything from customer service to sales automation. [2, 27] Many of these companies are focused on solving specific Indian business problems, from providing support in multiple regional languages to helping MSMEs compete online. [2, 16, 20]
The Promise and the Perils
The promise is immense: a world of unparalleled convenience where your digital life is managed for you. Agents could become indispensable companions, handling travel bookings, managing finances, and finding the best deals proactively. [7] However, this future is not without its challenges. The primary concerns revolve around privacy, data security, and trust. [13] For this to work, users must have confidence that their data is safe and that the AI is acting in their best interest. A significant majority of consumers demand transparency and the ability to switch to a human representative at any point. [8, 11] Furthermore, as AI takes on more complex tasks, questions around accountability, algorithmic bias, and the potential impact on jobs will become increasingly urgent. [25]
