The future of overnight travel between India’s tech hub and its financial capital has arrived. The new Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat sleeper is here, promising to slash journey times and redefine comfort for long-distance commuters.
A New Benchmark for Speed
The most significant
upgrade offered by the new Vande Bharat sleeper is the massive reduction in travel time. The train is set to cover the approximately 1,118-kilometre distance in about 16 hours. This is a game-changer compared to most existing trains on the route, which can take anywhere from 22 to over 24 hours to complete the journey. The semi-high-speed trainset achieves this with quicker acceleration and deceleration, raising the average speed significantly compared to conventional locomotive-hauled trains like the Rajdhani or Duronto Express. The inaugural service was flagged off on November 1, 2026, by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, marking a new era of connectivity on one of the country's busiest corridors. Regular services are scheduled to run six days a week, originating from SMVT Bengaluru and terminating at CSMT in Mumbai.
A Look Inside the Modern Coaches
Designed for comfort, the Vande Bharat sleeper train features 16 fully air-conditioned coaches with a total capacity of 823 passengers. The train offers a three-class configuration: AC First Class (1 coach, 24 berths), AC 2-Tier (4 coaches, 188 berths), and AC 3-Tier (11 coaches, 611 berths). Indian Railways and manufacturer BEML have focused on improving the passenger experience with ergonomically designed berths that have better cushioning than their predecessors. Every berth is equipped with integrated reading lights and USB charging points. The coaches feature automatic doors, a public announcement and information system, and CCTV cameras for enhanced safety. Special attention has been given to creating a calmer cabin environment with superior noise reduction and fully sealed gangways to help maintain temperature and cleanliness.
Upgraded Amenities and Facilities
The premium experience extends to the train's amenities. The bio-vacuum toilets are designed to be ergonomic and odour-free, similar to those on aircraft, with sensor-based water taps. A standout feature for First AC passengers is the inclusion of a hot water shower facility, a luxury for long distance rail travel. The train is also equipped with a modular pantry, modern fire detection and suppression systems, and the indigenous 'Kavach' anti-collision system for enhanced safety. For accessibility, there are specially designed berths and toilets for passengers with disabilities. These thoughtful additions aim to make the overnight journey not just faster, but significantly more comfortable and convenient for all travellers.
Fares and Competitive Positioning
As a premium service, the Vande Bharat sleeper's fares are positioned above existing AC trains. The reported fare structure for the Bengaluru–Mumbai route is approximately Rs 2,810 for AC 3–Tier, Rs 3,630 for AC 2–Tier, and Rs 4,450 for First AC. While this is higher than a Rajdhani ticket on other routes, it offers a compelling value proposition when compared to airlines. Factoring in the time and cost of travel to and from airports, plus airport security and waiting times, the Vande Bharat sleeper presents itself as a competitive alternative that delivers passengers directly into the city centres. For travellers who value comfort and time, the new service strikes a balance between the cost of a flight and the longer duration of other trains, fulfilling a long–standing demand for faster rail connectivity between these two economic powerhouses.
