Understanding the Official UPI Limits
First, it's important to know that most UPI apps don't have a feature to set your own custom daily spending limit. The primary limit is set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which is generally ₹1 lakh per day across all your UPI apps.
Some banks might set a lower limit, and you are also typically restricted to 20 transactions in a 24-hour period. These limits are for security and can't be changed by the user for day-to-day spending. So, if you can't set a hard cap, how do you enforce a budget? The answer lies in using the apps' other features strategically.
Hack 1: Use UPI Lite as a Daily Budget Wallet
The single most effective way to cap your daily spending is by using UPI Lite. Think of it as a small, separate wallet inside your main UPI app (available on Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and others). You load a specific amount of money into it from your bank account and then use that balance for your daily expenses. The magic of this hack is that you pre-commit to a spending amount. If you load only ₹500 into your UPI Lite wallet, you can't spend more than that for the day without consciously deciding to top it up again. Payments up to ₹1,000 can be made without a PIN, making it fast and frictionless for small purchases. The maximum balance you can hold is typically ₹5,000, and the total you can spend in a day is around ₹10,000. By using UPI Lite for all your non-essential daily spending, you create a self-imposed budget that protects the bulk of your salary in your main bank account.
How to Activate and Use UPI Lite
Activating UPI Lite is simple and happens within your preferred UPI app. Generally, the steps are: 1. Open your UPI app (like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm). 2. Go to your profile or settings section and look for the 'UPI Lite' option. 3. Select the bank account you want to link and tap 'Enable'. 4. Add funds to your UPI Lite wallet. Start with an amount that reflects your desired daily spending cap. Once activated, whenever you scan a QR code, your app will give you the option to pay from your UPI Lite balance. Choose this for your daily coffees, lunches, and other small expenses to stay within your intended budget.
Hack 2: Automate Bills with UPI AutoPay
A significant portion of your salary goes towards recurring bills like rent, subscriptions, SIPs, and loan EMIs. Letting these payments happen manually can make it hard to track your remaining disposable income. This is where UPI AutoPay comes in. By setting up mandates for your fixed monthly expenses, you automate them. This has two benefits. First, you avoid late fees and the mental stress of remembering due dates. Second, and more importantly for budgeting, it clearly separates your fixed costs from your variable daily spending. Once your automated payments are done, the remaining balance in your account is what you truly have available for other expenses. You can set up mandates for amounts up to ₹15,000 for standard payments without needing a PIN for each transaction, and up to ₹1 lakh for categories like insurance premiums and mutual fund SIPs.
Hack 3: Track and Tag Your Spends
Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to your finances. Most people overspend simply because they don't realise where their money is going. Modern UPI apps have built-in tools to fight this. Apps like Paytm now automatically categorise and tag your spending into buckets like 'Food', 'Travel', and 'Shopping'. You can even create your own custom tags. Make it a habit to review your spending summary at the end of each week. Seeing a visual breakdown of your expenses can be a powerful wake-up call. Did you really spend that much on ordering food? This insight helps you identify problem areas and adjust your spending habits for the following week, creating a feedback loop that naturally enforces discipline.
