P.T. Usha: The Payyoli Express
When discussing Indian success at the Asian Games, one name stands above all others in terms of sheer volume: P.T. Usha. The 'Queen of Indian Track and Field' holds the record for the most medals won by an Indian athlete in the history of the Games. Across
four editions from 1982 to 1994, Usha amassed a stunning total of 11 medals, comprising four golds and seven silvers. Her most legendary performance came at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games, where she was nearly unstoppable, winning four gold medals in the 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, and 4x400m relay, plus a silver in the 100m. This incredible feat, winning five medals at a single Asiad, cemented her legacy as a continental superstar and an icon for generations of aspiring athletes back home.
Leander Paes: The Tennis Maestro
While P.T. Usha dominates the overall medal tally, tennis legend Leander Paes holds the distinction of winning the most gold medals for India at the Asian Games. With a remarkable haul of eight medals in total, five of them are gold, complemented by three bronze. Competing in five separate editions, Paes showcased his versatility and longevity, winning titles in men's doubles, mixed doubles, and team events. His Asiad journey includes memorable victories with partners like Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza. His five golds make him India's most successful athlete by that measure, a testament to his sustained excellence and dominance on the Asian tennis circuit for well over a decade.
Jaspal Rana: The Shooting Star
Shooting has been a significant source of medals for India, and no one exemplifies this more than Jaspal Rana. The pistol shooter has an impressive collection of eight Asian Games medals, placing him high on the list of India's all-time greats. His tally includes four gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. Rana burst onto the scene by winning gold as a teenager at the 1994 Hiroshima Games. However, his crowning achievement was at the 2006 Doha Games, where he put on a masterclass to win three gold medals, even equalling a world record in the 25m Centre Fire Pistol event. His phenomenal success helped establish India as a powerhouse in shooting sports.
Milkha Singh: The Flying Sikh's Golden Run
Long before many of today's stars were born, 'The Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh set the standard for Indian excellence in athletics. While his overall medal count is lower than others on this list, his perfect record of four gold medals from four events makes him one of the most efficient and dominant athletes in Asiad history. He won two golds (200m and 400m) at the 1958 Tokyo Games and followed it up with two more (400m and 4x400m relay) at the 1962 Jakarta Games. His complete dominance in his signature events during that era made him a household name and India's first true track and field superstar.
Pankaj Advani: The Master of the Green Baize
While track and cue sports might seem worlds apart, excellence is a universal language. Pankaj Advani, a global force in billiards and snooker, has also left his mark on the Asian Games. He has won two gold medals, both in the English Billiards singles event. His first came at the 2006 Doha Games, and he successfully defended his title at the 2010 Guangzhou Games. Though billiards has not been a regular feature at the Games, Advani's perfect record and undisputed dominance whenever the sport is included highlight his standing as one of India's most accomplished sportsmen on the continental stage.
