The El Niño-Monsoon Connection
For India, the primary concern is El Niño's historically inverse relationship with the southwest monsoon. A strong El Niño can alter air pressure and wind patterns in a way that weakens the monsoon circulation. This often leads to suppressed rainfall over the Indian subcontinent, which is critical as the monsoon delivers about 70% of the country's annual precipitation. A weaker monsoon can mean delayed sowing of key summer crops (known as Kharif crops), lower yields, and increased stress on water resources. A Monsoon Already Behaving Erratically

A weak monsoon directly affects the sowing and growth of rain-dependent crops like rice, pulses, and oilseeds.
