Forget spring; India has its own spectacular cherry blossom season, and it arrives in autumn. In November, the rolling hills of Meghalaya shed their monsoon greens for a vibrant coat of pink, offering a natural spectacle unlike any other in the country.
An Autumnal Spectacle
While Japan's famous sakura bloom in spring, Meghalaya's magic happens in November. The flowers belong to the Wild Himalayan Cherry tree, or Prunus cerasoides, a species native to the Himalayas that flowers in autumn. This unique timing turns Shillong and the surrounding Khasi Hills into a pink paradise just as the rest of the country begins to welcome winter. The weather is typically ideal for travel, with cool, dry days and clear skies following the end of the monsoon season. Daytime temperatures hover between a comfortable 12°C and 20°C, though evenings can be chilly.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026
Coinciding with this natural event is the annual Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, one of India’s most popular music and cultural festivals. For 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. The event has grown significantly since it began in 2016 and now attracts major international and national artists, with a footfall of over 50,000 people. Past headliners have included artists like Ne-Yo, Boney M, and Jason Derulo. The 2026 lineup features international stars Khalid, Swae Lee, and Boys Like Girls. Beyond music, the festival includes food stalls, cultural performances, fashion shows, and art installations, making it a vibrant celebration of Meghalaya's modern and traditional culture.
Where to Find the Pink Canopy
You don't need a festival ticket to enjoy the blossoms, as the trees are scattered throughout the city and its outskirts. One of the most picturesque and accessible spots is Ward’s Lake, right in the heart of Shillong, where the pink reflections in the water create stunning photo opportunities. Other prime locations include the Shillong Golf Course, which offers wide views of cherry trees against a backdrop of green pines, and the area around the Polo Grounds. Simply driving around the city, particularly on the roads towards Upper Shillong or from Umiam Lake, will reveal beautiful, unexpected clusters of blooming trees.
Beyond the Blooms: What Else to Do
November is an excellent month to explore the wider wonders of Meghalaya. With clear skies and less rain, it's the perfect time to visit Cherrapunji (Sohra) to see its famous waterfalls, such as Nohkalikai Falls and the Seven Sisters Falls, which are still flowing from the monsoon rains. The crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River in Dawki are another must-see, offering memorable boat rides. For a unique cultural experience, visit Mawlynnong, known as 'Asia's Cleanest Village', or trek to the incredible Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat. The Don Bosco Museum in Shillong also offers deep insights into the culture of Northeast India.
Planning Your Trip
To reach Shillong, most travellers fly into Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), which is about 100–120 km away, and then take a taxi for the scenic 3–hour drive. Shillong has a smaller airport at Umroi (SHL) with limited connectivity. Since November is peak tourist season, especially around the festival dates, it is highly advisable to book flights and accommodation well in advance. Pack layered clothing, including warm jackets for the cold mornings and nights. Remember that it gets dark early, around 4:30 PM, so plan your day trips to start in the morning to make the most of the daylight.
