Route 1: The Classic Mysore Expressway
The most popular and fastest route to Coorg is via the Bangalore-Mysore Expressway (NH275). This roughly 265-kilometre drive typically takes five to six hours, offering excellent road conditions and numerous opportunities for memorable stops. The first
leg to Mysore is exceptionally smooth, often taking just 75-90 minutes. Your journey begins by heading towards Ramanagara, famous as the filming location for the movie 'Sholay' and a hub for silk production. A little further, you'll pass Channapatna, the 'town of toys,' known for its distinctive wooden lacquerware. A great spot for a classic Karnataka breakfast is Maddur, famous for its savoury 'Maddur Vada'. As you approach Mysore, consider a detour to Srirangapatna, Tipu Sultan's historic island fortress. From Mysore, the highway continues through Hunsur before you reach the gateway to Coorg at Kushalnagar.
Route 2: The Scenic Hassan & Sakleshpur Trail
For those who prefer a different vista, the route via Hassan offers a wonderfully scenic alternative, though it is slightly longer. This journey, covering around 330 kilometres, can take six to seven hours. You'll travel along NH75 towards Nelamangala and then onto Hassan. This path is ideal for travellers interested in history, as it provides easy access to the famed temple towns of Belur and Halebidu, renowned for their intricate Hoysala architecture. Continuing from Hassan, the road towards Sakleshpur ushers you into the heart of the Western Ghats. This stretch is particularly beautiful, with winding roads flanked by dense greenery and coffee estates, offering a more tranquil and offbeat driving experience. From there, you will proceed towards Somwarpet and then into the heart of Coorg, Madikeri.
Essential Stops Along the Way
The journey to Coorg is as much about the drive as the destination. On the Mysore route, a key highlight is Bylakuppe, India’s largest Tibetan settlement. The magnificent Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple, is a tranquil and spiritually uplifting stop. Just beyond, in Kushalnagar, you can visit the Dubare Elephant Camp for a chance to see elephants by the Kaveri river or explore the peaceful island of Kaveri Nisargadhama, a 64-acre park filled with bamboo groves. If you have time in Mysore, the opulent Mysore Palace is a must-see. Closer to Madikeri, Abbey Falls offers a spectacular sight as water cascades down 70 feet amidst private coffee and spice plantations.
Best Time for the Drive
While Coorg’s climate is pleasant for most of the year, the best time for a road trip is from October to February. During these post-monsoon and winter months, the weather is cool and comfortable, the skies are generally clear, and the landscape is at its most vibrant green. The summer months, from March to May, offer a pleasant escape from the city heat. The monsoon season, from June to September, transforms the region into a lush paradise with waterfalls in full flow. However, be prepared for heavy rainfall and potentially slippery roads, which may limit some outdoor activities.
Tips for a Smooth Journey
To make the most of your road trip, an early start from Bengaluru is highly recommended to avoid city traffic. The highways are well-equipped with restaurants and fuel stations, especially on the popular Mysore route. While the main highways are generally in excellent condition, some of the internal roads within Coorg, particularly around Virajpet, can be narrower and less maintained, so it's wise to drive cautiously. As you ascend the ghat sections closer to Madikeri, expect winding roads and be prepared for the misty conditions that give the region its charm. The drive itself is a visual treat, so allow for spontaneous stops to take in the views of sprawling coffee plantations and verdant hills.
