A Market Reaching an Inflection Point
India's pet care market is no longer a niche segment but a booming industry. Projections indicate that the market, valued at over ₹6,000 crore, is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18-20%. This surge is fueled by a profound cultural shift:
the humanization of pets. An increasing number of Indians, particularly millennials and Gen Z in nuclear family structures, now see pets as integral family members, not just animals. This change in mindset, coupled with rising disposable incomes, has led to a dramatic increase in spending on everything from premium pet food and grooming services to specialized veterinary care. Reports from 2026 show a 41% year-on-year growth in pet care orders on quick commerce platforms, a clear sign of this escalating demand.
The Tier-2 and Tier-3 Opportunity
While metro cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Delhi have historically driven this growth, they are also becoming saturated markets. The real headline now is the explosive growth occurring in non-metro areas. According to a June 2026 report, Tier-2 and smaller cities posted a staggering 96% year-on-year growth in pet care orders, significantly outpacing their metropolitan counterparts. Cities like Guwahati, which saw a nearly 1,500% jump in orders, along with Dibrugarh, Meerut, Madurai, and Kottayam, are emerging as the new frontiers for the pet care industry. This isn't just about food; it's about the adoption of premium pet care habits across a wider geographic base, signalling a fundamental change in consumption patterns across the country.
What's Driving the Change?
Several factors are converging to power this non-metro boom. Firstly, the rise in disposable incomes is not limited to big cities, allowing more households in smaller towns to afford quality pet care. Secondly, the digital revolution and the spread of e-commerce have been game-changers. Platforms like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart, along with brand-owned websites, have made premium and specialized products accessible to consumers who previously had limited options. This improved access is coupled with growing awareness about pet nutrition and wellness, often driven by social media and digital marketing campaigns from major brands. The result is a new generation of pet parents in cities like Indore, Lucknow, and Nagpur who are eager to provide the best for their companions.
Brands Making Their Move
Recognizing this massive opportunity, both established players and new entrants are aggressively expanding their reach beyond the metros. Mars Petcare, which owns powerhouse brands like Pedigree and Royal Canin, has long identified India as a priority market and is focusing on a diverse portfolio to cater to various price points. Homegrown success story Heads Up For Tails (HUFT) is pursuing a data-led expansion, deepening its presence in Tier-1 cities while proactively moving into emerging Tier-2 markets with high rates of first-time pet adoption. The brand now has over 110 stores across the country. New FMCG players like Godrej Pet Care and Wipro Consumer Care are also making a determined push, with Godrej committing ₹500 crore to its pet care division and expanding its 'Ninja' dog food brand across South India, a key growth region.
The Future Is Omnichannel and Accessible
The expansion into smaller cities is not just about placing products on shelves. It’s about building an entire ecosystem. Brands are creating an omnichannel experience that blends physical retail with the convenience of quick commerce. HUFT, for example, combines experiential retail stores where pets are welcome with 10-minute deliveries through platforms like Blinkit. The demand is shifting beyond basic food to include a wider range of products and services. Searches for dog shampoo surged nearly 600%, and interest in grain-free food grew over 150% in a year, indicating a desire for premium and wellness-oriented products. This trend suggests that the future of the pet care market in India will be defined by accessibility, variety, and a deep understanding of the evolving needs of pet parents, no matter where they live.
