to scratches, and easy to clean. So-called 'performance fabrics', often used for outdoor furniture, are another excellent choice as they are engineered to resist stains, spills, and odours. If you love the look of leather, it can be a good option because it's easy to wipe clean, but be aware that it can be prone to scratches. For an extra layer of protection, especially during shedding season, consider using stylish, washable slipcovers or throws on your sofas and chairs.
Rethink Your Flooring
Your floors bear the brunt of pet activity, from muddy paws to excited zoomies. While wall-to-wall carpeting can trap hair and odours, you don't have to live with bare floors. Ceramic or porcelain tiles are virtually indestructible and incredibly easy to clean, making them a top choice. For those who prefer a warmer look, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and laminate are fantastic alternatives. They mimic the appearance of real wood but offer superior scratch and water resistance. If you must have rugs, choose low-pile or flat-weave designs that don't trap as much fur and are easier to clean. Washable rugs are also becoming widely available and are a game-changer for pet-friendly homes.
Select Scratch-Proof Furniture
Puppies love to chew, and cats need to scratch. Protect your investment by choosing furniture that can withstand this behaviour. Opt for sofas and tables with metal or solid wood legs, which are far less tempting to chew than softer woods. When it comes to surfaces, finishes like veneers and laminates are more resistant to claw marks. For homes with active pets, it's also wise to choose furniture with rounded edges to prevent injuries during playtime. To keep delicate items safe, use vertical space with wall-mounted shelves and choose heavier decor pieces made of stone or metal that can't be easily knocked over.
Create Designated Pet Zones
Giving your pet their own dedicated space can help contain their clutter and make them feel secure. This doesn't have to be an eyesore. Many Indian brands now offer stylish, handcrafted pet furniture, from wooden beds that blend with your decor to elegant feeding stations. Walls can take a surprising amount of abuse, from wet dogs shaking after a walk to general smudges. A semi-gloss or satin paint finish is far easier to wipe clean than a matte one. When painting, look for low-VOC or zero-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints, which are safer for your pets' sensitive noses as they release fewer harmful fumes. Similarly, many common houseplants can be toxic if ingested by curious cats or dogs. For a splash of safe greenery, choose pet-friendly plants like spider plants, areca palms, or money trees.
