For a forest to thrive, expand, or recover from damage, its seeds must travel. This process, known as seed dispersal, is fundamental to plant life. It prevents overcrowding, allows plants to colonize new areas, and helps ecosystems adapt to a changing
climate. While wind and water play a role, animals are the primary movers and shakers in many of the world's forests. In tropical regions, more than 80% of tree species rely on animals to transport their seeds. We often credit the most obvious candidates for this work: fruit-eating birds like toucans that carry seeds over long distances, or monkeys and bats that drop them across the canopy. The Underestimated Ground Crew
However, long-term studies are beginning to challenge this bird-centric view. A landmark project in Panama, which monitored regenerating forests over a century, delivered a significant surprise. Researchers found that while birds were important, especially in younger forests, the majority of plants were actually dispersed by terrestrial mammals across all forest ages. Creatures like opossums and coatis (a relative of the raccoon) were found to be doing the heavy lifting, moving a huge diversity of seeds. This finding was unusual because in many regenerating forests affected by hunting and habitat loss, mammal populations are too low to have such an impact. The protected status of the Panama site allowed these ground-dwelling animals to flourish, revealing their true potential as master gardeners.

Just when scientists thought they were getting a clearer picture, another study has revealed an even more overlooked group of seed dispersers: invertebrates. While we’ve long focused on vertebrates, a comprehensive review has compiled evidence showing that tiny creatures like slugs, crickets, beetles, and even crabs are actively dispersing the seeds of at least 186 different plant species around the globe. This isn't an isolated or accidental phenomenon; it's a widespread ecological process that has been happening right under our feet. These animals aren't just bumping into seeds; they are consuming and passing them through their digestive systems, a process known as endozoochory. Many plants have even evolved specifically for this, producing small, dull-colored fruits near the ground, designed to attract a passing slug rather than a high-flying bird.
Masters of Precision Planting
It’s easy to dismiss the work of a slug that might only move a seed a few inches. How can that compare to a bird that flies for a kilometre? The key is strategy. While large animals are experts at long-distance dispersal, these smaller creatures are masters of “micro-targeting.” They move seeds to nearby, highly specific environments—like a patch of rich soil or a shaded nook under a log—that are perfect for germination. This short-range, precise planting is a complementary strategy to the scattergun approach of larger animals. It ensures that even if a forest isn't expanding its borders, it is successfully regenerating and filling gaps from within. Both long-distance and local dispersal are crucial for a resilient ecosystem.

Recognizing this expanded team of gardeners is not just a scientific curiosity; it's critical for conservation. Globally, the loss of animal biodiversity has already reduced the ability of plants to keep pace with climate change by an estimated 60%. When we lose seed dispersers, we don't just lose a species; we break a link in the chain of forest regeneration. This has direct consequences for carbon storage, as forests with disrupted seed dispersal accumulate carbon much more slowly. Protecting our forests requires more than just saving trees. It means protecting the entire web of life, from large mammals to the humble slug, that makes a forest a living, breathing, and growing system.
