Why Was This Change Made?
According to Thai authorities, the previous 60-day visa exemption was part of a strategy to boost tourism after the pandemic. However, the longer stay period was reportedly being misused by some foreign nationals for activities outside of tourism, such as working illegally. By shortening the stay to 30 days, the government aims to curb these violations while still welcoming genuine tourists. For the average Indian visitor, whose trip typically lasts about a week, this 30-day window remains more than sufficient.
Your Updated Travel Checklist
While the visa-free status is a major convenience, arriving prepared is key to a smooth entry. The Embassy of India in Bangkok has issued advisories outlining the necessary preparations. First, ensure your passport has at least six months of validity from your date of arrival in Thailand. You should also carry proof of a confirmed return flight ticket and details of your accommodation, such as hotel bookings. Immigration officials may also ask for proof of funds, with the suggested amount being around 20,000 Thai Baht per person, which can be held in cash.
Don't Forget the Digital Arrival Card
A mandatory step for all visitors is completing the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC). This must be filled out online within 72 hours before you arrive in the country. Each traveller, including those in a group, is responsible for completing their own digital card. It is a straightforward process that helps streamline immigration procedures upon landing. This requirement remains in place regardless of your visa status.
Planning to Stay Longer Than 30 Days?
For those who wish to enjoy an extended vacation beyond the new 30-day limit, all is not lost. It is possible to apply for a one-time extension of up to 30 additional days at a local Thai immigration office. However, this extension is not guaranteed and is granted at the discretion of the immigration officer. If you know from the outset that your trip will exceed 30 days, the most reliable option is to apply for the appropriate tourist visa through the Thai e-Visa system before you travel.
A Note on Border Crossings
Another aspect of the new rules targets the practice of 'visa runs'. For those entering Thailand via a land border under the 30-day visa exemption, entries will be limited to twice per calendar year. This rule is aimed at preventing individuals from repeatedly exiting and re-entering the country to reset their stay period. This limitation does not apply to entries by air, which remain the primary mode of travel for most Indian tourists.
